Ventured a bit south for this region of the state. Downriver is much more urban, Ann Arbor is still a drive, and it’s much flatter than the Irish Hills. Still, a notable distance running tradition, as Temperance Bedford has had recent success (Whitelaw, Johnson, Kaiser), those 80’s-90’s Monroe teams (I would have loved to see that 4×8). Rebekah Smeltzer from Jefferson was a multiple-time State Champ and is making a name for herself in collegiate coaching circles.
Here are the teams I have from the River Raisin area (or watershed?):
Adrian Adrian Lenawee Christian Adrian Madison Blissfield Britton Deerfield Carleton Airport Dundee Erie-Mason Hudson Ida Monroe Monroe Jefferson Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central Morenci Ottawa Lake-Whiteford Petersburg-Summerfield Pittsford Sand Creek Tecumseh Temperance Bedford Waldron
Despite the slightly lower rating from 2017, Abbie has spent three years at the forefront of Lansing area cross country
She’s notched two top-10 performances at Greater Lansing and 2 Regional titles
She’s spent all three years in the 18’s (even 2018, a season cut short)
This past year was a year full of PRs, first nabbed at East Lansing, then again at the DeWitt Regional
To cap it off, she ran her best race of the season at MIS, finishing 14th
23. Kazuma Bowring, Highland-Milford
Kazuma is a multiple sport athlete that is competitive in all that he does. In the winter he plays on the Milford Hockey Team, where he received Honorable Mention All-State honors for his defensive play. Last spring he anchored our 7:47 4×800 team as a Sophomore on a team with 3 seniors.
Coach Brian Salyers
Milford, like a few other schools, runs a small number of meets, which one bad race can derail a season average
Kazuma did not have that bad race, even his “worst” performance was a sub-17 at the toughest course in Metro Detroit, 13th in Oakland County
Ran his best races to end the season, with three straight 200+ performances (equivalent of sub-16)
MITCA was 15:57 (208.2)
Looks to be the lead runner on a Milford squad that’ll be knocking on the top-10 yet again
We’re a few days out from the release of regional sites and selections. A few weeks out from the time that I’ll finish analyzing and beginning to write previews.
Given that the regional previews won’t begin in earnest until July, I decided to give these little projections, segmented by area. In many cases, teams from the same area will have city, county, or all-area meets. In a few cases, they don’t. I have great reverence for the teams of many areas. Ann Arbor, 127, Petoskey, Grand Rapids, Kensington, you name it. This will be a fun way of seeing how similar teams in vicinity of one another stack up.
I’ll start with Ann Arbor:
