The Rundown

Year after year, writeup after writeup, so impressed with her range. She’s only touched the 400m twice while wearing a Grand Haven jersey, each time (once as a freshman, once as a sophomore) has been sub-60. She’s worn the Buc jersey on plenty of occasions on the cross course, many of which sub-19, some flirting with the 17’s. In between, a bevy of 1600m and 800m championships and incredible times. Each of the past two years, she’s run 2:12 at some point in the season and grabbed All-State in that event.

But what I really liked was her 4x800m anchor. Racing in the second heat, receiving the stick a good 40m behind Northville, racing against the clock and going for the win. Valerie patiently closed down the gap until passing the Mustangs in the final meters, clinching a 7th place finish for her Grand Haven girls. She’ll be running with them by her side this fall, so be aware in those final 173m, she’ll be looking to kick you down.
