The Rundown

After two years running in the high-19’s and 20’s, very solid by most runners, Layla approached her junior year with a much-improved attitude. Admitting that self-talk and stress were a negative influence, she sought to change her mindset, and as a result of that change, she found much improvement. Her times improved, dropping nearly a minute from both her sophomore best and at the State Finals. In terms of place, she moved from 13th to 2nd in Wayne County, 149th to 36th at Division 1 State. But that was just a preview, what we saw in spring is likely what we’ll see coming forward. She’s one of 17 returning Michigan girls that broke 11:00 in the 3200m, doing so in less than ideal conditions at Regionals. Two weeks later, in the complete opposite (and still less than ideal) weather, her 11:07 placed 13th in Division 1. The Livonia running scene is only getting stronger by the year, with Layla leading the girls in 2023.
