2023 Ratings: Portage Early Bird

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

1. Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
2. With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
3. Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
4. The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
5. These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

EARLY N’ ELITE

As usual, I’m writing about one individual that had an outstanding performance, whether on their own or helping their team toward a top finish. If you’re a coach/parent/athlete and you know of someone with a great effort that you think deserves recognition, kindly let me know, I’ll try to write about them in the future!

I always like taking a look back at previous years and especially previous openers. 2022’s version of this meet was a bit more humid and hotter, but even then, doesn’t match the improvements between years for Jonah Bills and Annie Alkema. This is the first time ever that Annie has opened with a sub-20 and easily her best finish at the Early Bird. Girl concentrated more on the mid-distance stuff this spring, knocking off 8 sec. from her best 800m. Looks like that’s paid dividends towards her fall. Jonah nearly matched his PB from MITCA and ran 8 whole minutes faster than he did here in 2021. I know I know I know it’s early, but it’s appearing as if both will perform much better than their projections.
