The Rundown

I get the sense that TJ’s sophomore XC season was meant to teach him a lesson. Not punishing him, so to speak, but to let him know the depths of his fortitude and how that may help him in his career. Early on, he was faced with low iron levels, and actually looking back at it, his high-15/low-16 marks are even more impressive considering. Then, the Thursday prior to Regionals, a bike accident resulted in seven stitches in his thigh. Powering through the pain and stiffness, TJ raced to his second consecutive Region 15 victory, then procured his second straight All-State.

Because of the sheer number of Division 2 Boys rising to the occasion in hitting the automatic qualifier, the field was split into two heats. The first heat contained Solomon Kwartowitz and Mike Hegarty, both cruising to regional wins. The second heat contained Carter McCalister, Joey Bowman, Connell Alford, and TJ, amongst many others. Essentially two match races, the winner going to whomever could throw down the fastest time. In the heat, Kwartowitz soloed a 9:16, setting the standard that could be broken in the final heat. That 9:16 had been run by Hansen during indoor, also beaten on a few occasions during outdoor. But neither indoor or the early season featured the suffocating heat we faced in early June. Surely drawing on his tolerance for pain accrued during cross country, TJ powered through that second heat, crossing the line in 9:11 to secure his first State Title. The first of many to come? We shall see…
