How Right/Wrong Was I?

10 for 12, with the usual suspects proving me wrong: Dexter and Cranbrook’s boys.

GOAT PERFORMANCES AT THE GOAT BARN

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Elijah Smith, Dexter

Some say the key to the Dreadnaughts advancement was their fresh, clean kit. Others say it was Elijah, out running for Dexter for the first time this year, breaking 17:00 for the second time on this tough Springfield Oaks track.

Ethan VandenHaute, Cranbrook-Kingswood

Not too many races are on Ethan’s portfolio, but one thing we can glean is his love for regional competition. Each of the past two years, he’s run a personal best on regional day. This year’s version was 70 seconds faster, but to be fair, it was only his second race of the year.

Becca van Lent, Ann Arbor Skyline

Becca’s season perfectly captures Skyline’s meteoric rise through Division 1 this season. She opened her career with four of five races above 21:00, including a 21:11 here at Holly in mid-September. Following that Holly race, she’s been sub-20 on five of six occasions, closing with 19:40 over the weekend. Dramatic improvement that only validates my thought that Skyline’s coaches get the most out of the talent they receive.

Ava Fahrenkopf, Linden

Word on the street is that Linden’s Eagles (and their coach) were a bit motivated by not being picked to win. Well, they surely ripped those projections to shreds. Capping off their strikingly low score was Ava, whose solid 21:16 was good for 20^th, her third straight top-20 finish at a regional race, leading to her third straight State Finals appearance.
