The Rundown
Title, then turnover.
Henry’s ascension into the upper echelon of Michigan running coincided with Forest Hills Eastern’s rise in D2. The Hawks transformed from a team that finished 5th in their 2021 regional to one that finished 5th at State in 2022. They took the next leap, only four places, though equally as significant, into first in 2023.
Henry’s path had an extremely similar trajectory. He debuted with that 2021 squad, running in the 18’s, then eventually the 17’s. Quality, but not on the state level quite yet. Prior to his sophomore year, FHE’s focused off-season training took hold with the team, to great benefit to Dixon. He kicked off the season with a sub-17 at Under the Lights, holding those marks until the end, closing the year with a 16:21 at MITCA. Henry ended up 38th in D2, on the cusp of All-State, just as his coalition combined for 5th place, on the cusp of a State Title.
With that trophy on his mind, Henry laid the groundwork for his contribution. His first track season for the Hawks. 1:59, 4:19, 9:20. Speed was found, strength accumulated, and a whole new standard was set for his junior cross season.
As his teammates did their part in making FHE a championship-level squad, Henry followed. He hit the 15’s at Shepherd and never looked back. He acquired championships of his own, winning the OK Gold. He was a low-stick in the D2 race, placing 6th, every spot desperately crucial. Eastern’s title was elite and Henry was elite, too.
Two varsity runners remain from that title squad, Henry one of them. There’s no better senior from which the Hawks could learn.
