The Rundown
Running for Northville, one must run with a purpose. For one, you’ve gotta be competitive enough to make their varsity squad. But when on that squad, you’re fighting off teams that want to knock you off.
Ethan’s been a part of the Mustang varsity squad for three years now, contributing to state titles both on the grass and on the track.
This past fall, I felt he really took a leap, one that carried over throughout his entire junior season. One area the ratings are good for is comparing year to year from the same invites. For much of his sophomore year, he was running in the mid-190’s, the equivalent of ~16:15. Compare now to his junior year, 204-210, or around 15:40. This leap was crucial, as Northville lost a good chunk of its scorers from its 2022 title squad.
Thanks in part to Powell’s ability to give the Mustangs another low stick, they repeated in 2023. He wasn’t done giving to his team. At the D1 State 4×8, he held off a Forest Hills squad looking to pull an upset, running a 1:55.9 split, handing off to Herger for the chance to clinch their third straight title. That was the start of a great day, the end of that meet saw Ethan run a 9:10 in the 3200m, capping off a season that saw him drop over 15 seconds from his 2023 best.
He’s shown he can step up for his team, now he’s thrust into the lead role. Trust the evidence, Ethan’s in for an impactful senior year.
