The Rundown
10th at the mile, 6th at two, 4th at the finish. Holding back the first two laps, drawing even at the mile, biding her time before ripping a 2:35 final 800m. Patient racing, wise beyond her years, that’s Ava Schafer.
The first sentence describes her XC State Finals, a 17:53 that was one of a few sub-18 efforts last fall. Ava showed a tendency to rise to the occasion when needed, whether that was being dragged to fast times at Bluejay, State, or MITCA. Or embracing championship season with wins at Greater Lansing, in the CAAC Red and at Region 14.
The second sentence describes her 3200m at D2 State, another mastery of a performance. After a few hours of rest following her contribution to the Redwing 4×8 All-State, Schafer smartly held back and let others do the work. The opportunity was there to aggressively pace after a major PB, however winning a title was much more important. Wisdom. Racing with a purpose, when Ava decided to move, she moved with a purpose, opening up an insurmountable gap on second place. Even after an uneven pace and tactics focused on winning, Schafer left Hamilton with a new PR, 10:39.
Being even-keeled, being patient, staying steady. Underrated characteristics in life and in racing. Ava’s in a good place.
