NORTH WOODS WARRIORS
Bryce Gross, Flint Powers Catholic
His regional preview called out a tremendous leap between his freshman and sophomore years. Kinda wild that even more could be in the tank. After nearly breaking 17 (impressive on a normal day) in the heat at Possum Hollow, Gross unleashed an early PR here at Northwood. Only about 11 seconds faster than last year, but much, much earlier, September 7th vs. October 18th. Considering he’s forever been a kid to grow in the fall, a season full of heroics could await.
Emilia Garces, Midland Dow
Garces was definitely a name on my radar over the summer and it definitely wasn’t just because of her sister. Emilia had won almost all of her 8th grade cross races, the lone defeat at Zone 4. Still, wins at Bluejay, Al Kayner, a few sub-12 efforts. As impressive as those were, she’s running at an even faster pace over a longer distance. She’s now one of six Michiganders to break 18 this year and has the fastest rating of any 9th grader by 11 seconds.
