The second weekend in September is always a relief. Typically two huge meets, now three with Ottawa Hills joining Holly and Spartan. Teams leaving the nest, taking on the best throughout the state. Very illuminating as far as rankings go, no doubt enlightening as well to a runner when they face great competition.
Week Three’s Rankings tell the tale of how these are created.
This week’s rankings contain meets through Saturday (9/14).
These are for fun. And I do this for free. I’m positive toward every runner in the state. Abiding by that golden rule, you should reciprocate. Capisce? Enjoy.

Recap
Two years ago, we were extremely hyped at the prospect of Marquette coming into Spartan Elite and shocking the state. Finishing 14th in 2022, perhaps our excitement was premature, the setting too large, or the Sentinels just had a poor day. Quietly, Marquette had a better day in 2023, placing 9th. Then last Friday, the Sentinels truly shocked the state. They didn’t surprise this believer, but I’m sure many other heads were turned. Seppi Camilli up front with the big boys, five more behind him under 16:50. Third in the Elite division and truly a top-5 team in the two peninsulas.
Looking Forward
Marquette’s boys are in the Championship division at Roy Griak. Can the hits continue? Live scoring link – https://live.pttiming.com/xc-ptt.html?mid=7425
Rudyard, coming off a win earlier in the week at Tiffany Thorp, will cross paths with Munising at the latter’s home invite. Two top-three D2 teams in a little preview of what’s to come in a month.

Recap
Houghton’s Gremlins had their nasty little hand prints all over Calumet, their top-three girls going one, two, and three. In last week’s ranking, I thought Marquette’s girls could place 4th to 6th amongst Michigan teams in Spartan’s Green division. I didn’t anticipate 4th overall! Of the top-20 girls in the race, only 4 hit a season’s best, one being the Sentinel frontrunner Ella Fure.
Looking Forward
Marquette’s girls will also be at Griak, racing 45 minutes later. I’ll be curious to see how Ewen-Trout Creek continues to move up. Yesterday, the Panthers defeated #3 Hancock and are clearly the top team in D3.

Individual Rankings
Recap
Sadly, we didn’t see Gabe Litzner race against Bidwell. But did Gabe really need anyone to push him? Litzner was one of four boys on the day to drop under 16:00 and he was the fastest of the bunch by several seconds. I guess we’ll have to wait until Bluejay to see his potential when chasing. Seppi Camilli was in an unfamiliar spot at Spartan and responded beautifully. He lowered his mark from last year by 45+ seconds, placed 5th amongst Michiganders, and nearly ran a personal best on a less-than-ideal day.
Looking Forward
Sadly, even in Minnesota, conditions haven’t cooled much from last week. Still a great opportunity for Seppi Camilli to lower his personal best. The Griak course is similar to Spartan, perhaps a confidence boost from last week can spur him to seek something more aggressive?

Recap
The flat, fast Canada Lakes Pathway was home to an eastern UP showdown on Monday. Talya Schreiber vs. Samantha Taylor, the two prior D3 champs. Schreiber won this round, each blazed into the low-19’s. These aren’t reflected in this week’s rankings, time not an advantage over here, but expect Schreiber to be at the front next time around.
Looking Forward
New vs. old, experienced senior vs. wide-eyed freshman. The El Harger Invite will see Ironwood’s Aubrey Smith, who yesterday attained her 2nd win of her career and Engadine’s Molly McNamara, who is quickly learning how to run in the 20’s. Different divisions, but we don’t care, both of these girls are in contention now or will be in years down the road.

Homeschool & Other Teams
Homeschool, clubs, and teams not allowed to compete in MHSAA events. Perhaps that’s a little strong on wording, but I’m not sure why schools such as Kensington Woods, Christ the King, and Washtenaw Christian don’t compete at the MHSAA level. They’re clearly schools, they’ve been at it for awhile, and it’s not as if other charter-type or private schools can’t compete. Not stirring up controversy here, just curious on the reasoning!
