As always, these writeups below will shoutout someone or a team that stood out from the race. That may not be the best runner or the winning team. Perhaps a team that surprised, a runner breaking through, or a runner contributing to a team victory. Of course, if you come to me nicely and want to brag about a fellow team/competitor/teammate, let me know, and I’ll try to give them love further down the line.
WELCOME TO CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
Just as projected, Kyle O’Rourke and the Clarkston boys prevailed. O’Rourke pulled away in the middle mile, opening up a gap that grew to 20 sec. by race end. His fastest time on the course, the fastest winner since 2020, and the first Maverick to win since 2013 (the legend, Brian Kettle). The Wolves had just enough to fend off an aggressive Oxford, freshman Cooper McNaughton coming up huge in the middle of the pack. Fresh off a PR at Hansons, McNaughton was the 3rd freshman finisher in the entire field. With three in the top-10, Oxford had one of the better days relative to expectation. Also gotta love a Jack Dysarz, the senior who moved up 53 spots from last year to place 45th and help the Wildcats finish second.
Four straight came to fruition. In Oakland County history, the second girl to accomplish the feat of four wins in four years (the other – Katie Boyles, 1997-2000). Lucy Cook was her typical patient self, waiting for the bottom of the first hill to open it up. Undaunted and in total control, she cruised to a nearly 20 sec. victory as her Rochester girls rocked the course behind her. The Falcons are looking more and more like a top-5 team in D1, this time buoyed by an outstanding performance from freshman Charlotte Jones. She’s raced twice here at Possum Hollow, dropping more than two minutes in a little over a month. It was also a pleasure to see Linda Lopez showing signs of capitalizing on the potential she showed in middle school. The Dragon sophomore earned her second All-County, 24th as a freshman and 7th this time around.
