2025 Rankings: Championship Season Girls

One batch of rankings out of the way, a little regional preview as well, now October is right around the corner. We had an introduction to Championship Season with the Berrien County meet, now it begins in full force with Oakland County, Wayne County, and Greater Flint. And it’s not an official championship, but as close to a Pre-State as we can get – PORTAGE.

As with the previous rankings, all meets with over 50 participants of each gender are included (even if the ratings themselves aren’t posted to the site, they’re in my database). The rankings take the individual ratings from each race and weigh them using factors of recency, field size, and field competitiveness. Those weighted ratings are then sorted by team, scored against the entire division, and ranked. Thus, teams with more depth tend to be ranked a little higher than they’d be at a regular invite or even the State Finals. But I know no better way to rank all the teams in a division than to compare against all teams in a division.

These are filtered a bit, a runner has to have competed in September at a race I’ve rated. Hopefully this accounts for injuries.

Scroll down and you’ll find Upper Peninsula and Individual rankings.

As always, these are for fun and a vehicle to drive interest in the best sport in the world. If they cause undue stress or pressure or motivate you to write me unkind messages (only happened a few times this year, but gotta get out ahead of it!), this site might not be for you. That’s fine, the many XC fans of Michigan will enjoy it all the same.

The Past Two Weeks

Whitmore Lake has competed during the week, missing most of the major invites from the past two weekends. The Trojans have toed the line in many of those over the past three seasons, so I doubt their absence from Jackson or Bluejay will have any consequence. It didn’t have any impact on their overwhelming state lead.

The remaining teams of the top-four all moved up. Kalamazoo Hackett occupied five of the top-six spots in the D4 race at Otsego Bulldog, true dawgs in their domination. Both Buckley and Grand Traverse Academy were the top D4 teams in their divisions at Bluejay and Veterans Serving Veterans.

Huge Leaps

Bellaire got in here by sheer circumstance of how I generate these things. Although a seriously fun event, I can’t take Charlevoix’s Mud Run seriously, as many teams take these sorts of invites non-competitively. The NMCS Twilight and Roscommon Mid-Week Invites are too small to reliably generate ratings. Thus, the Eagles competing with a full squad at Kalkaska and Veterans Serving Veterans gets them in here.

The Guardians of Petoskey St. Michael always add folks over the course of the year. Through Mid-September’s rankings, they had yet to compete with five girls. Since September 15th, both Helena Ramsey and Nora Weed have raced a few times, and now St. Michael is listed.

Looking Forward

EVERYONE in action this weekend, and seven of the Top-Ten teams are at Portage. So, a good D4 State preview? Whitmore Lake seems to be a bit in front of the rest of the division, but the race for second appears to be close. Which one of Grand Traverse Academy, Kalamazoo Hackett, or Hillsdale Academy will step up? If it’s GTA, you can only assume that Buckley can be in contention for a podium spot, as the Bears have placed ahead of GTA in the past two invites.

The Past Two Weeks

The defending champions, Lansing Catholic, are still solidly holding down the top spot. The Cougars competed close to home on both weekends, grabbing wins at both Pewamo-Westphalia and DeWitt. Their depth is phenomenal, all five scorers placing in the top-ten in each race. Pewamo-Westphalia, a power always seen here, ramped up their racing over these past two weeks, winning at both Apples to Apples and Bluejay, placing 2nd behind LC at their home invite. Although placing behind the Pirates at the P-W invite, Saugatuck remains ahead of them in the overall rankings, mainly due to a great effort at Allendale Falcon.

Huge Leaps

Most major has to be Grandville Calvin Christian. Over the past two weeks, many Squires had their highest ratings of the season: Lynnae Meengs, Joellah Bouwman, Faith Jenkins, Annika Kauffman, and Aletta Scholten among them. That shows up in the team standings too, as Calvin Christian won the Sunrise and Jays divisions, at Chargers Autumn Sunrise and Bluejay, respectively.

Looking Forward

Blissfield is heading down the road to Hudson Booster, Olivet and Traverse City St. Francis have the weekend off. And like D4, everyone else is heading to Portage. A good chance for Lansing Catholic to further prove they’ll repeat in November. For Saugatuck and Pewamo-Westphalia to duke it out for the second spot. And everyone else for the opportunity to move up the ranks and into the podium conversation.

The Past Two Weeks

Otsego still holds the very top ranking, but Holland Christian is making a run for it. At Otsego’s home invitational, always one of the greater concentrations of D2 strength in Michigan, each team was able to place at least six girls under 20-flat. The Bulldogs were a bit stronger up front; the Maroons were able to fit seven girls in the top-35. Otsego’s power through their top-three girls was the gap necessary for the win and may be the difference at the state level.

Huge Leaps

The greatest moves came from Region 15, where both Frankenmuth and Shepherd will be fighting for a qualifier. The Bluejays have welcomed the return of Danica Redes, who ripped her best time of the season at Bluejay, hitting a 19:29. The Eagles have had season bests from a ton of spots – Lucy Conzelmann at TVC 2, Natalie Foltz at Bluejay, and a return to early season form from Elise Barden.

Looking Forward

Again, with the exception of Goodrich at Greater Flint and Spring Lake taking the weekend off, EVERYONE at Portage. Holland Christian and Otsego will get the chance to further prove they’re a step above everyone else, everyone else will make a bid to be included in the podium topic.

The Past Two Weeks

Really splitting hairs here, but I feel Ann Arbor Pioneer maybe didn’t have their greatest performance at Jackson. Then they far and away had an incredible race at Otsego. Nina Moore found a sub-19, Hana Boggess bounced back from Jackson, Keira Von Blon had the highest rating of her young career, Natasza Dudek made a bid for the 15’s. Jacob Tanner has done some work on this, browsing and computing all the Tullyrunners ratings, he thinks (and I agree) they’re a top-5 team in the country.

Huge Leaps

Coming in at the tail end of the top-ten are Okemos and Rockford. The Wolves led Bluejay Elite for two miles, succumbed to Traverse City West in the final mile, but left Shepherd with PR’s and SB’s from many of their varsity girls. The Rams have welcomed the return of Daisy Cox, who’s been in the 18’s in each of her initial races. She’s been joined at that speed by Morgan Sanders and Jillian Lewakowski, making for a formidable top-three.

One of my favorite newer traditions is teams exploring options out of state. Northville’s boys were just in Canada, Otsego’s girls took a trek to Minnesota earlier in the year. Holland West Ottawa is taking advantage of the updated regulations and hitting up Terredise for XC Town Twilight. Traverse City West will celebrate their Bluejay win with the weekend off. Everyone else will be at Portage. Ann Arbor Pioneer hoping to repeat their western trip from last week, Romeo looking to repeat their previous two Portage titles, and the rest of the field looking for moves up in the rankings.
