2025 Rankings: Championship Season Boys

One batch of rankings out of the way, a little regional preview as well, now October has arrived. We had an introduction to Championship Season with the Berrien County meet, now it begins in full force with Oakland County, Wayne County, and Greater Flint. And it’s not an official championship, but as close to a Pre-State as we can get – PORTAGE.

As with the previous rankings, all meets with over 50 participants of each gender are included (even if the ratings themselves aren’t posted to the site, they’re in my database). The rankings take the individual ratings from each race and weigh them using factors of recency, field size, and field competitiveness. Those weighted ratings are then sorted by team, scored against the entire division, and ranked. Thus, teams with more depth tend to be ranked a little higher than they’d be at a regular invite or even the State Finals. But I know no better way to rank all the teams in a division than to compare against all teams in a division.

These are filtered a bit, a runner has to have competed in September at a race I’ve rated. Hopefully this accounts for injuries.

Scroll down and you’ll find Upper Peninsula and Individual rankings.

As always, these are for fun and a vehicle to drive interest in the best sport in the world. If they cause undue stress or pressure or motivate you to write me unkind messages (only happened a few times this year, but gotta get out ahead of it!), this site might not be for you. That’s fine, the many XC fans of Michigan will enjoy it all the same.

The Past Two Weeks

Any time the Lakers travel down to the XC Heartland, they throw down a result that gives wonder to what could occur in November. At John Bruder, Maple City Glen Lake was able to get all five scorers under 17:40. Kicking off the boys races at Bluejay, 17:40 became 17:30. Because of the heat, the course seemingly ran similar. But even on a competitive, scoring level, the Lakers impressed, winning the Jays Division against a host of D3 & D4 teams.

As impressive as the Lakers were, Holland Calvary Christian is making moves right with them. Racing right afterward in the Bluejay Elite division were the Crusaders, mixing it up, placing 15th amongst Michigan’s best teams. Comparing times, Calvary is slightly better at the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th spots, but the main gap occurs at the 5th runner.

Huge Leaps

There weren’t too many giant jumps as we’ll see down the page. But moving up three spots when in or around the cusp of the top-10 warrants mention. Kicking off the day at Shepherd, Breckenridge was able to finish ahead of #12, #13, #18, and #19. The Huskies can thank Dominick Chiverton and Oliver Burt, each of whom found the 17’s for the first time in their lives. Later in the day, Petoskey St. Michael tried their hand in the Gold section, placing 7th amongst a host of D3 squads. Caleb Chamberlin found a spot in the 17’s for a lifetime best and Cody Bradley, the 2x All-Stater, made his first jaunt into the 16’s this fall.

Looking Forward

The more I pen these, the more I think I need to describe those NOT at Portage. And for D4, that’s Royal Oak Shrine and Mesick. The Bulldogs have the weekend off and the Knights are taking to the Possum Hollow hills. In 2024, Shrine placed 19th in the Oakland County meet, then went on to place 5th in D4. Another top-20 finish would be a good omen for the next month of the season.

Beyond those two, every single last one of the top-10 will be in action at Portage West MS. This appears to be one of the more closely fought divisions, so take heed to the early morning race.

The Past Two Weeks

Had a minor upset, with Lansing Catholic eking out a victory over Saugatuck at the P-W Invite. The Cougars placed three bodies in front of the Trailblazers’ second man, then stayed in extremely close proximity at the 5th spot, a formula that worked out to a 6-point margin. Charlevoix experienced as close to a State Final field as they’ll find, honing in on a top-10 finish at Bluejay, beating numerous upper division squads.

Locking down the top spot was Jackson Lumen Christi. The Titans cruised to wins down the road at Sharp Park and further north at DeWitt. The Titans were able to stack all their scorers in the top-15 in both races, defeating a good bit of highly-ranked divisional rivals.

Huge Leaps

Very little movement at the lower end of the rankings, with one exception. Landen Styka has returned and as a result, Ithaca has moved up. Even without the defending regional champ and 2x All-Stater, the Yellowjackets were looking like a contender for a top-10 spot at MIS. With Styka, who’s already back in mid-16 form, Ithaca is a candidate for a top-5 placing, perhaps even better.

Who ain’t at Portage? Charlevoix and Ithaca, two teams that would’ve had to take some of the longer treks.

Who is? Everyone else! Including the top-two teams, Jackson Lumen Christi and Saugatuck. The Titans and Trailblazers have not faced off this year, each seemingly picking the other major invite of each subsequent weekend.

The Past Two Weeks

At Bluejay, D2’s elite > D1’s elite. Flint Powers Catholic, Alma, and East Grand Rapids comprised three of the top-five slots. Powers had an impressive win, with Lennox Naswell outlasting Ian Morgan up front, but more importantly for scoring purposes, their 5th coming in at 16:24. The target is now on the Chargers’ back, with the Panthers and Pioneers knowing the mark that has been laid down.

Huge Leaps

Coming into the season at 5th, placing 17th in the first batch of rankings, I was a bit curious as to when Cedar Springs would truly come to play. The RedHawks have risen in the past few weeks, evidence coming in various spots. One, a runner-up finish in their home invite. In conference action, hanging right with top-15 Allendale. This past weekend, hitting the standings ahead of a top-10 Shepherd team and other top-27 foes. The descending times of Peyton Farrell have been one reason, his 16:22 at Shepherd was nearly 30 sec. faster than any mark obtained this fall.

Looking Forward

Mid-Michigan teams are opting for something other than Portage. Shepherd is likely exhausted from a weekend of hosting 7000+ runners and spectators, Alma has homecoming, and Flint Powers Catholic will look to be the top team at Greater Flint.

Over at Portage, East Grand Rapids will look to bounce back from a rare defeat at Bluejay and they’ll be racing with a whopping 7 other top-10 outfits.

The Past Two Weeks

Well, when you race duals and 6k’s in Canada, you don’t have much opportunity to move down in the rankings. Holding onto the top ranking has been Northville, still chugging along in KLAA action and taking their talents across the border, placing all five scorers in the top-10 over 3.72 miles of Canadian XC action.

Lowell has held onto the 2nd position, but the gap has closed. At Bluejay, Grand Ledge was able to gain the upper hand on the Red Arrows. The Comets ran up a huge margin at the 3rd/4th spots, scoring 67 points to Lowell’s 102. Ann Arbor Pioneer keeps moving up (and the way these work, need one more good performance from their 5th to vault even higher), winning at Jackson and again in the SEC Red. Kalamazoo Central welcomed the return of Samuel Baker in a victory at Otsego Bulldog.

Huge Leaps

Even beyond the top-10, there’s been much movement both up and down. One of the more prominent shakeups has been courtesy of Traverse City Central. At both Bluejay and Jackson, the Trojans were able to place all of their scorers below 17-flat, hitting the top-10 in each D1-centric field.

Other major moves were made by Saline (2nd again in the highly competitive SEC Red), Caledonia (winners in the OK Green and 2nd at Otsego), and Grand Blanc (the freshmen holding up to finish 6th at Bluejay).

The true test of whether one should use the athletic.net simulation or mine. Both Northville, Portage Central, and Brighton are highly-ranked here, but listed at #5, #16, and #31 on athletic.net. They’ll be in the Portage field, as will everyone else sans Grand Ledge (probably preparing for a potential Greater Lansing title) and Traverse City West (that’s a long drive).
