COUNTY CHAMPS

For the second year in a row, the girls from Rochester. Last year’s County win was part of the kickstart toward the end of the year, a close that saw the Falcons capture OAA White and Region 8 crowns, then go onto finish 4^th in Division 1. This year, they loaded up in the front, Ella Abraham capturing 3^rd and Charlotte Jones earning 10^th.  Even with those two in the top-10, the Falcons still trailed, but found a clutch performance from Maren Greve, the sophomore running nearly 100 sec. faster than she had last year.

Also repeating was Kyle O’Rourke. The Maverick senior became the 9^th boy to win back-to-back titles, the second Milford boy (Brian Kettle) as well. His 15:46 was a second faster than last year’s effort (in conditions around 15 sec. slower) and matches Kettle’s 2012 effort for 6^th all-time when the County meet has been held on the Kent Lake shores.

For the 12^th time in history, the Milford boys. The Mavericks adopted an aggressive strategy early, a pack of red streaming through the first mile with five in the top-30. Their depth faded a bit late, but the trio of O’Rourke, Gannon Wheeler, and Todd Tobin established enough of a margin that made a comeback all but impossible.

For the first time in her history and entirely of her own doing, El McMahan. The Highlander junior has become infamous for her work ethic and high-mileage weeks. Well, guess what? It’s paid off. Over her three-year career, she’s progressed from 21-flat and 31^st place as a freshman to 18:24 and a win as a junior.
