Post Portage and we’ve got a clear picture of the state outlook. Many teams and athletes battled the weekend’s heat, either putting in a memorable performance in adverse conditions, or maybe falling victim to the unusual conditions. A few teams proved that they’ll be a force in the coming weeks. Others will stew and look for revenge in a months’ time.
In the meantime, you get my own spin on rankings. It’s important to note that while there were some gigantic races over the weekend, this is a cumulative ranking. Great performances may move the needle in an upward direction, abnormally poor ones in a sea of great races won’t have too much of a downward effect.
As with the previous rankings, all meets with over 50 participants of each gender are included (even if the ratings themselves aren’t posted to the site, they’re in my database). The rankings take the individual ratings from each race and weigh them using factors of recency, field size, and field competitiveness. Those weighted ratings are then sorted by team, scored against the entire division, and ranked. Thus, teams with more depth tend to be ranked a little higher than they’d be at a regular invite or even the State Finals. But I know no better way to rank all the teams in a division than to compare against all teams in a division.
These are filtered a bit, a runner has to have competed in a race since September 12th (Spartan/Ottawa Hills day) at a race I’ve rated. Hopefully this accounts for injuries.
As always, these are for fun and a vehicle to drive interest in the best sport in the world. If they cause undue stress or pressure or motivate you to write me unkind messages (only happened a few times this year, but gotta get out ahead of it!), this site might not be for you. That’s fine, the many XC fans of Michigan will enjoy it all the same.

As Carina Burchi has risen throughout the year, returning to her familiar form, Whitmore Lake has more solidly held onto the top spot. The Trojans now have the best trio in D4 and can still hold their own through the back half of their lineup. That was the case at Portage, where WL bettered the D4 team field at every spot in the lineup.
The ratings differ a bit from the Portage results, Hillsdale Academy becoming more of a contender. The reason? All seven Colts would’ve found a place into the top-five of every team besides Whitmore Lake and HA’s fifth (Mary Schlueter) was ahead of everyone else’s fifth. Of course, we’re talking about a hypothetical state final race where the fifth is the most consequential spot. What actually happened is Kalamazoo Hackett was third, benefitting from a PR from Kiera Piper in the early morning heat. If the Irish depth can hang close to Hillsdale Academy, then look for Hackett to occupy the other podium spot.

Major Moves
They were thought to be in the top-ten to begin the season, now they’ve clawed their way back. Concord came to Portage with a small squad, but almost all made the most of their opportunities. Two girls earned season bests, two freshmen earned personal bests. Audrey Pyle had been on the high side of 21:00 all year, then busted a 20:44 in the early morning heat. Coming in less than a minute later was Audrey Rinehart, dropping over 40 sec. from her previous best.

What’s Next?
One lil’ midweek showdown and one on Saturday. The two contenders for Region 35 will go at it, Ubly hosting their home invite, Kingston looking to escape with a trophy. The Cardinals are inching ever closer to the Bearcats. They’ve lost each matchup, but were separated by 2 points at Green Devil. Come Saturday, Kalamazoo Hackett will take the trip east to a typically quick Hudson Mills South course. They’ll meet Whitmore Lake there. The temps appear cool, so expect some spicy times, and perhaps the two will emerge holding the first and second spot in a week.

Adding newcomers and improving the ones that’ve been there, Lansing Catholic appears to be the heavy favorite. Portage is a prime example, the baby blue crew is excellent at all the spots. Josie Bishop and Grace Wonch excellent frontrunners, Anna Drauer the best third runner in the field, Lindsey Ludwig the best fourth, Frances Melinn the best fifth. Need I go on?
Both Pewaukee (pttiming, what’re ya doin’?) Pewamo-Westphalia and Saugatuck have faced off twice, both outings won by the Pirates. Head to head, it seems the Pirates are solidly in front, though the Trailblazers showed at an invite such as Holly that they can rise to a level similar to P-W.

Major Moves
For Midland Bullock Creek, both genders excelled at the 2nd Jack Pine Jamboree. But we can only write about one for now. Comparing the two JPC meets, the top-two teams have remained the same: Shepherd and Clare (fierce rivalry!). Placing third in the first one was Sanford-Meridian, the Lancers Region 25 competition. Then in this last one, MBC had opened up a gap with their 3rd place finish. Of significant improvement was Sara Guest, dropping from 32nd place to 19th, running a personal best of 21:49, a far cry from the 24’s she was finding to start the year.

What’s Next?
Two area championships will feature D3 teams that could contend. Over on the far southeast side, Blissfield will compete for the Lenawee County crown. In our capital region, Lansing Catholic, Pewamo-Westphalia, and Olivet will try to assert that D3 teams are truly the best Lansing-area squads. I’ll do some deeper inspection and simulations before Saturday, but it appears that Blissfield will be the Lenawee County favorite. At Greater Lansing, Okemos is probably the team to shoot for, but Lansing Catholic has answered every challenge this year (and actually won in the Cougar 2 Mile opener).

Otsego is still the favorite at this point, though Holland Christian keeps steadily closing the gap. Two Saturdays back at Otsego, the Bulldogs 2nd-5th girls averaged 18:41, their Maroon counterparts averaged 19:03. A week later at Portage, that difference had greatly decreased, 19:41 to 19:45.
If either team is to falter in their bid for glory, Grand Rapids Christian will be laying in the weeds waiting. The experienced Eagles squad, many of whom have toed the line in big races, earned 3rd place at both Bulldog and Portage.

Major Moves
The D2 Portage field was loaded, containing 9 of the top-13 teams, then #14 Pinckney. The Pirates ventured west and beat five of ‘em. They did so via a gradual move throughout the race, 331 points at the mile finding them in 8th, tabulating 278 at two, then 252 at the finish, good enough for 7th. Eastynn Charder and Valyntina Garcia were two that exemplified that strategy, picking off 67 points combined in the final two miles.

What’s Next?
Following D2 bangers at Bluejay, Bulldog, and Portage, it only makes sense that a majority of folks are opting for rest and recuperation. Two teams will be in action over the weekend, Grand Rapids Christian at Kent Ottawa and Goodrich at its Kayla O’Mara Invite (hard to believe it’s been almost 20 years since her tragic passing).

Podium Contenders
For the top spot, it’s likely all Ann Arbor Pioneer. The Purple Crew has left the huge mid-season meets unscathed, winning handily at Spartan, Jackson, Otsego, and Portage. With the exception of Romeo, the Pioneers were able to place five girls in front of everyone else’s third girl.
The aforementioned Bulldogs were without Emmie Clor (who’s listed in the entries at Macomb County), but still finished 4th in that loaded field. With her, it’s an easy task to figure out that Romeo could have placed 2nd. Could have isn’t reality though, and that’s where a team such as Brighton steps in. Those other Bulldogs persevered through the heat, putting all five of their scorers under 20-flat.
Holland West Ottawa could also be in there, the Panthers packed up four girls between 17:50 and 18:30 in their runner-up finish at Otsego. Upstart Hudsonville was behind their league rivals there, but finished first in the most recent OK Red Jamboree.

Major Moves
At this point in the season, any move is major. Traveling north on 23 to Greater Flint, Hartland set out to launch their bid for a top-10 spot. The Eagles were aggressive on the quick Cummings Center course, four of their scorers hitting personal bests. Two were sub-19, the other three sub-20. The end result was an upper division victory where they nearly scored a third of the closest competitor’s points.

What’s Next?
After they all congregate on Portage, folks tend to go their separate ways. Two spots will have two of the top-ten teams – River Rat Open and Kent Ottawa. Kent Ottawa operates as a quasi-championship meet for Grand Rapids area teams, but it’s tough to go: Portage, Kent Ottawa, OK Conference, Regional, State in five straight weeks. Thus, it’s not as popular as an Oakland County or Greater Lansing. Anyhow, both Hudsonville and Rockford will be there. With Daisy Cox returning, the Rams have found their way into the latter stages of the top-ten. Hudsonville has been there all year, ahead of Rockford in the second OK Red Jamboree and at Portage, hoping to claim west side supremacy. Down at Willow on Friday, Ann Arbor Huron will host its annual regional course preview. Which is sort of interesting as neither Ann Arbor Skyline nor Northville will be running their regional races there. Though it’s a welcome opportunity to get a Saturday off.
