MACOMB’S FINEST
First, anyone remotely interested in a recap of the meet should read Glenn Craze’s Macomb County Cross Country Rankings. A much more detailed summary than I could ever write.
But, I gotta say some things:
Credit to Lydia Scally of Romeo for stepping up as the Bulldogs’ 5th girl. Like Craze, I didn’t project Lydia as one of Romeo’s varsity girls. Projections are one thing, reality another. Reality churned out a SIGNIFICANT personal best, more than a minute, skipping right into the low-20’s. Even missing Reese Rosbolt, I think that the defending state champs had one of their better performances of the season.
Xavier Solgot was probably a little underrated from the way I run my simulations. He’d had two outstanding efforts at Bluejay and Lamplighter, and a bunch of solid ones where he clearly cruised to wins. The sophomore is already showing wisdom, conserving energy when needed throughout the season and leaving no doubt as he claimed his first county title.
Macomb Lutheran North shocked the northern suburbs with their top-three boys finish. The final three scorers for the Mustangs all stepped up, but especially William Haskins. The Lutheran North senior crossed the line with a 3 second personal best (17:53), his third sub-18 ever. With three points separating Lutheran North and Utica Ford, 18:00+ would’ve left the Mustangs without a trophy.
