2025 Rankings: League Week Boys

This sport of ours gives us enjoyment all year. Trudging through the snow on wintry days, speedy circles around the track, fun summer runs. But does anything beat these final weeks of the year? The huge mid-season meets are done and we’re rolling towards races of great consequence. Lifetime memories have been accrued all fall and even more are to come.

Hopefully this batch of rankings validates what’s already occurred and gives motivation to what could come.

As with the previous rankings, all meets with over 50 participants of each gender are included (even if the ratings themselves aren’t posted to the site, they’re in my database). The rankings take the individual ratings from each race and weigh them using factors of recency, field size, and field competitiveness. Those weighted ratings are then sorted by team, scored against the entire division, and ranked. Thus, teams with more depth tend to be ranked a little higher than they’d be at a regular invite or even the State Finals. But I know no better way to rank all the teams in a division than to compare against all teams in a division.

These are filtered a bit, a runner has to have competed in a race since September 19th (Jackson/Cougar Falcon/VSV weekend) at a race I’ve rated. Hopefully this accounts for injuries.

As always, these are for fun and a vehicle to drive interest in the best sport in the world. If they cause undue stress or pressure or motivate you to write me unkind messages (only happened a few times this year, but gotta get out ahead of it!), this site might not be for you. That’s fine, the many XC fans of Michigan will enjoy it all the same.

Finally, An Individual Breakdown

It’s a banner year for senior D4 runners. This ’25 class has been a prominent faction of the D4 landscape for a few years now. Last fall, the top-four spots were all occupied by the current senior class – Marek Butkiewicz winning, followed by Abenezer Cerone, Landon Rogers, and Grayson Rorick. Landen Livingston hung back in 10th, Brody Karg made his presence known during track. And this fall, all of ‘em have been sub-16. Butkiewicz still is a level above, flashing a sub-15 this past weekend at Gabriel Richard. Beyond him, I can see a world where any of the above grab second place.

Intriguing League Battles

Almost everyone’s done with league competition, save for a few. We have two top-10 teams battling it out in the MSAC – #4 Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart and #9 Breckenridge. The first outing saw a runaway Irish victory, all five Sacred Heart scorers finishing before Breckenridge’s 2nd man. In the rematch, the Huskies significantly closed the gap, running almost even with SH, save for a tiny gap at their 2nd man. How will the trend continue – will it be Breckenridge’s improvement driving a win or will Sacred Heart keep up the win streak?

Of the teams that finished their league season, a shoutout has to go to Maple City Glen Lake, winning the NWC for the first time in 23 years.

Finally, An Individual Breakdown

Lightly raced, but impactful nonetheless has been Hunter Eaton. The Rayder junior has won four of those outings, the most recent being his 2nd consecutive Northern Shores victory. The quickest of the bunch was at Bluejay, his 15:22 in the Elite section only bested by D1 and D2 standouts. This spring, he was able to establish himself as one of the better endurance athletes in Michigan, winning the D3 3200m. Coming off a 9th place finish last fall, the upward trajectory is too apparent.

Two sophomores are continually finding their way into the mix. Christian Craanen was the runner-up at Portage and Nole Lorenzen’s 15:41 from yesterday gives him the 2nd best time in all of D3. Craanen’s loss at Portage was to a guy we’ve seen here for a few years, Gage Hoffman. Hoffman was 3rd at last fall’s State Finals and has been spitting out sub-16’s all year.

Intriguing League Battles

Save for Lansing Catholic (CAAC White, going for back-to-back titles), The Potter’s House (Alliance Conference, the Pumas winning 2 of the 3 jamborees this fall), and Hanover-Horton (Cascades), everyone else in the top-ten is done.

The latter team mentioned, the Hanover-Horton Comets, are in an absolute battle with #11 Jonesville. The first Cascades West race featured a 2-point Jonesville win, those other Comets opening up enough of a gap through 4 guys to hold on for a win. For the next jamboree, H-H was able to subtract a point, Jonesville added one, and H-H won on the sixth runner. That 6th guy, Bristen Cekander, has been finding his form late in his first year of competing, five straight sub-19 efforts. This is close. Not much more needs written.

Finally, An Individual Breakdown

Two have risen above the rest: Robert Jazwinski III and Jonah Workman. Jazwinski has found a home in Whitehall and has undoubtedly benefitted from having a consistent group of folks to run with. Don’t believe me? Check the results. All wins. The fastest time of the day at Spartan. A 15:05 personal best this past week. A 15:13, strength-driven pull away in the final mile at Portage. Workman, recovering a bit from the typical mid-season sickness, hung with Jazwinski for those first two miles. His portfolio, both from the early season (14:58 at Sparta) and from track (9:06 3200m) proves that he contains the necessary tools to make November’s race one of the more anticipated matchups.

Intriguing League Battles

Contrary to D3 and D4, many of these squads have yet to come into action this week. One has, Otsego adding another Wolverine Conference trophy to their crowded case. Last week, Alma completed their perfect season in the TVC. The OK White is always a hub of D2 activity and this year is no different – #2 East Grand Rapids, #4 Grand Rapids Christian, and #9 Forest Hills Eastern all playing prominent roles. EGR has found significant margins in each of the first two conference competitions, 30 point+ wins in each. Don’t mistake margin for weakness, each of these two races have had >30 boys break 18:00.

Finally, An Individual Breakdown

I gotta admit, it was a bit of a stretch to give Kamari Ronfeldt the #1 ticket this summer. He didn’t finish last fall’s D1 final (under the weather, no shame in that). He didn’t win any state titles in the spring. He held the 5th fastest returning 3200m time. But year after year, the numbers say that the jump from 10th graders exceeds that of 11th graders, and Ronfeldt was projected to be our fastest runner.

Thus far, the results have held up that projection. Even by Possum Hollow standards, the Milford Invite tends to run slow (the Fox n’ Hounds nature of the meet being a large contributor). Ronfeldt’s 15:35 matched what I believe to be the course record, a 15:35 by Ben Hill. Following that banger, he’s been sub-15 on three separate occasions. The most impressive of the bunch was a 14:50 at Portage, attained during the absolute hottest part of a hot day.

His teammate Beckett Crooks joined him on two of those sub-15 escapades. Crooks won the latest one at Gabriel Richard and has championship experience, winning this spring’s 3200m in the final lap.

Crooks beat Kyle O’Rourke there and O’Rourke is competing in the most Milford of Milford seasons. His 2025 portfolio contains four races. One, a 15:56 opener at Averill. Two, an Oakland County win with his best Possum Hollow time. An LVC meet and an Ohio invite, neither of which count for rating purposes. We’ll see what KOR has in store when it’s his turn on the fast course.

This may be the deepest field I’ve ever seen at the top. I really hate to say this. ‘cause it ain’t about times, but it’s been on my mind for a couple of weeks. The drought we’ve had this fall plus the cooler temperatures may lead to a MIS race where a bunch of kids crack the 15 min. barrier. You can make arguments for any one of the top-13ish runners to break into the 14’s. I hope it’s as many as possible.

Intriguing League Battles

We had a bit of an upset in this week’s action, Traverse City Central winning the Big North Conference over Traverse City West. Region 2 is really appearing to be a beast. Midland will be a contender, Grand Blanc can qualify as well, and how either fare against Flint Powers will be a great preview for the future pressured situation. Highland-Milford is perpetually underrated on here, but a Lakes Valley Championship will greatly impact their figures.

Meanwhile, another star-packed region will be at Portage (and I’ll be there to view). We get an early look at what might go down with #4 Kalamazoo Central facing #10 Portage Central. The Mustangs took home the win in the initial SMAC meetup, but the Giants were missing a large chunk of their varsity lineup. We’ll see how the teams compare at full strength.
