Ahh, feels good to be back. This is the time of the year where I feel like an athlete, needing my down time after an arduous season. I’ve already put out some much too early 2026 rankings, now time to delve a little deeper into the stats of the State Finals. There will be more to come from the other divisions and more writings dedicated to the team and individual champions.
Surprise Teams
The one team with a penchant for proving the projections wrong was able to do so – the Petoskey St. Michael girls. The Guardians were projected to place 15th, with a range of 11th to 21st. Their 10th spot was much better than either. Almost all of the Guardian girls placed better than expected:
Mea Wesley – projected 76th, placed 52nd
Sofia Cadarette – projected 145th, placed 86th
Ella Nolan – projected 131st, placed 92nd
Helena Ramsey – projected 209th, placed 181st
Nora Weed – projected 228th, placed 223rd
The only girl that was a little higher than initially thought was Veronica Paga, who has much to hang her hat on this fall, including a 20+ sec. personal best in her Region 28 win.
There weren’t any boys teams that fell on the good side of defying expectations, hitting outside of their projected range. But a few were close, such as Petoskey St. Michael, Webberville, and Ubly.
The Guardians were projected 10th, their range was wide with many potential outcomes, and they placed at the very top of it with a 4th place finish. PSM had season or personal bests from their top-three, including Atticus Cadarette and Caleb Chamberlin who vaulted into the 16’s for the first time ever.
Webberville had a huge day from senior Ethan West, who nearly matched his exceptional regional performance with a 17:27. Gavin Howery also stepped up, running his fastest time of the season.
Ubly had clutch performances from their two seniors, Michael Walsh and Guy Knoblock. Knoblock had put forth a season full of 20:00+ efforts, but was able to summon his first sub-19 ever. Walsh closed his senior year with a season best.
Unexpected All-Staters
Eight girls stepped out onto the podium when not projected to do so:
Lindsey Nordyke, Byron Center Zion Christian – projected 40th with a 33% chance of All-State, placed 13th
What did it take? Only a 43 second personal best and her first ever trip into the 19’s.
Amelia Hoyt, Bellaire – projected 36th with a 6% chance of All-State, placed 21st
What did it take? Being the 2nd fastest 8th grader in the field. Also, nearly a 40 sec. personal best and her first run into the 19’s.
Amelia McKinney, Grand Traverse Academy – projected 31st with a 40% chance of All-State, placed 22nd
What did it take? Her second-fastest time of the fall, matching the 20:06 that she raced to a week prior at Benzie.
Brooklyn Griffin, Buckley – projected 65th with a 19% chance of All-State, placed 24th
What did it take? Her second run in the extremely low-20’s, nearly matching her time from Benzie the week prior. Each mark was significantly lower than the rest of her season, which was largely spent over 21:00.
Payton King, Kingston – projected 41st with a 28% chance of All-State, placed 25th
What did it take? Almost a 15 sec. personal best and her fifth straight effort in the 20’s.
Adrienne Mitchell, Lansing Christian – projected 39th with a 34% chance of All-State, placed 26th
What did it take? Her fastest mark of the season, even faster than the highly competitive Greater Lansing or on the quick Happy Acres course.
Alyssa Spicer, Mesick – projected 42nd with a 19% chance of All-State, placed 27th
What did it take? Dropping two minutes from her best time from 2024. Spicer’s 20:11 nearly matched the 20:05 she ran at Benzie a week prior.
Haley Stimer, Concord – projected 47th with a 9% chance of All-State, placed 29th
What did it take? Her fastest race since her freshman year. Stimer’s 20:17 was her third consecutive season best.
Six unexpected All-Staters, including:
Jacob Ferdubinski, Riverview Gabriel Richard – projected 32nd with a 46% chance of All-State, placed 21st
What did it take? A trip back into the 16’s, a place he’d only been to twice since mid-September. Perfect timing.
Cole Brege, Rogers City – projected 60th with a 26% chance of All-State, placed 22nd
What did it take? His first sub-17 in over two months. Brege had been in the low-17’s for much of the year, including a 17:00.5 to place 3rd in Region 28, but hadn’t matched the 16:53 he laid down in his opener. That is, until his 16:43 at MIS.
Lance Niedzielski, Mason County Eastern – projected 38th with a 23% chance of All-State, placed 23rd
What did it take? His second sub-17 of the year, both coming in the final two weeks of the year.
Nolan Koscinski, Bear Lake – projected 75th with an 8% chance of All-State, placed 26th
What did it take? Dropping over three minutes from the fastest time of his freshman year and more than a minute than what he’d typically been running here in 2025.
Caleb Chamberlin, Petoskey St. Michael – projected 63rd with a 7% chance of All-State, placed 28th
What did it take? The end of a PR cascade that started at Bluejay (17:58) and ended here, at 16:49.
Reuben Jiran, Novi Christian Academy – projected 37th with a 26% chance of All-State, placed 29th
What did it take? Dropping nearly 40 sec. from his time here in 2024 and dipping into the 16’s for the third time in three weeks.
