Top Returners

Brynn Schulte

Freshman year contained wins at Kalkaska, Mancelona, and the Mud Run. Also top-finishes in championship races, all 3^rd’s at Northern Michigan, Region 19, and the LMC.

Anna Pray

Established herself in the 800m this spring, clearly a fan of excruciating pain over 2.5 minutes. Actually, she was a bit below that 2.5 min. mark, having closed her season with six consecutive sub-2:30’s, including a 12^th place finish in Division 3.

Kendall Standfest

Multi-sport star trended downwards as the season rolled along. After opening with a 21:53 at Pete Moss, Kendall subtracted two full minutes from that by the time she left East Jordan in late October.

Hunter Schellenbarger

Hunter’s progress from her freshman to sophomore year unlocked the Elks quest towards a top team. She leap frogged much of the 21’s and all of the 20’s on her path to a 19:55 and 10^th place finish at East Jordan.

Jaida Schulte

’22 season featured her first top-100 finish at MIS and a 30 sec. improvement at Region 19, heading well into the 20’s.

Eva Pray

Moved down in a few different manners. One, in terms of place: from 27^th to 17^th in the LMC and 27^th to 22^nd in Region 19. Then in terms of seconds, running 22:06 at that region in 2021 to 21:09 this past fall.

Joelle Swanson

Incredibly consistent in her first year running the 5k. Nearly all of her efforts were in the 21’s and even those that weren’t, were juuuust barely above 22:00.

The Rundown

Things began to fall into place during his sophomore year of track. After a freshman year where he showed a penchant for speed (2:04, freshman County champ) and two cross seasons with satisfactory strength, Ty started to take his races to another level. He wasted hardly meets in dropping time, opening with a 2:01 at SVSU, then knocking on the door of 2:00 many times. While he was waiting to bust through 2:00, his mile times began to drop as well, and by season’s end, we had a 1:59/4:20 kid.

With the breakthroughs on the track came similar accomplishments in cross. Learning to race, how to redline it, and hang tough was a major emphasis. Ty was able to grind through tough courses, placing 2^nd in Region 7 and 5^th in Oakland County, then outlasting fast competition at the Hansons and LVC Invite. His 15^th place at the State Finals was his first All-State, a feat he was able to match in track, even from the slower heat. The Knights have a great mix of speed, strength, youth, and Ty’s experience. This fall may be special, both in the confluence of all those factors and Ty’s mix of grit and wheels.

The Rundown

Emily’s rebirth and regrowth has been a joy to see. She kicked off her career as a freshman, gradually improving with each race before she unleashed the surprise performance of the year, placing 8^th in 2020’s State Finals, running a personal best on an unseasonably warm day. That personal best stood for the longest time, and to outsiders such as myself, it appeared it may stand forever. But pundits and analysts such as myself aren’t out there training, we’re not out there motivating and encouraging, we just see times and occasionally get a glimpse into an athlete’s thoughts.

So when an Emily, after a careful start to her junior year, runs a 19:19 at Cougar Falcon, some heads turn. When she solos an 18:39 at East Lansing, even more heads turn. And you wonder, can she recapture that freshman form? Well, girl went and tossed that freshman form out the window, unleashing a beast in her late season. Following East Lansing was another personal best, then kicking down three girls in the final 173m at State to place 5^th, then shredding the 18:00 barrier at Shepherd. Come track, the #ShepherdMagic came through for her again with a 3200m personal best, then that tendency to bring her best at State resulted in her first sub-5 ever.

Start to pay attention come October. If Emily’s on a roll, watch out.
