Top Returners

Brad White

Kid just has range. Can bring it in the 800m on the track, but also in the 5k cross distance. Was low-16’s on a few occasions, such as Portage and Region 19. His 17^th place finish at MIS was his best yet, dropping from placing over 100^th to All-State.

Nic Porter

Brad’s running partner for years, bringing two green jerseys to the front of many meets. Joined White in the 16’s for the first time last year, his massive PB of 16:26 coming at Region 19.

Andrew Klaus

The Pioneers’ 2^nd-3^rd man for much of the year. Dropped more than a minute off his previous best, but I think another point of comparison is more prominent. His prior run at State was in 2020, placing 224^th. Qualifying with his Clare team in 2022, he placed 46^th.

Caidan Gaskill

Don’t mind the early season races, watch him at the end. His descent from the 20’s into the low-18’s was one of the key reasons Clare moved up into a top-10 finish at MIS.

William Warner

If track is any evidence, expect him to move up and challenge the 18-flat mark. High-18’s for much of the year, an 18:20 at MITCA, then on the cusp of breaking 5:00 in the spring.

Neiko Ketchum

Freshman year contained many 19-20 min. efforts, with one major anomaly: his 17:47 at East Jordan for Region 19. Yes, I know that’s a quick course, but still far and away his best performance of the year.

Potential Newcomers

Connor Schmidt

Top-10 and a sub-11 during a huge middle school race at Bluejay, then returned a month later to run 17:42 at MITCA.

Chiristian Villa-Bilton

During October, was sub-12 in all of his 2-mile races. Was consistently in the top-10 in all three Jack Pine jamborees.

Top Returners

Kaya Vrable

Not only did Kaya have a breakout year in terms of place, she also conquered courses in significantly less time. Whereas she stayed north of 20:00 as a freshman, her sophomore year ended with 19:xx marks in 6 of her final 7 races.

Faith Swenor

Her best efforts may come on the track (Regional Champion in the 800m, 8^th at D3 State too), but she’s found a way to carry things over to the grass. Sub-20 for the first time ever last September and placed in the top-50 in her first MIS experience.

Paige Herron

Each of the past two years, has managed to crack 20:00 and perform her best down the stretch. This past year, her 19:40 at Shepherd gave her a 4^th place finish at Regionals. That was her 3^rd straight top-15, but best finish of the three years.

Rachael Walch

Three regional races, three top-15’s, three years of medals. Can she make it four? And if Caro puts four in the top-15 as they’re capable of, another Regional Championship might be on the way.

Alexa Long

In her two years of cross country, she’s competed at State twice for Caro. Moved up 27 seconds in tougher conditions to crack the top-100 in 2022.

Lexi Wegner

As a freshman, showed an ability to come back. After a few 23:00+ efforts at GTC, Thumb Area, and Regionals, found her way back in the 22’s at State. In much tougher conditions, mind you.

Addison Fisch

From her first race at Mike Jackson in 2021 to her D3 State Finals last fall, Addison lessened her time from 33+ minutes to sub-23.

The Rundown

From 2020 to now, Romeo has had a variety of teams. State title winners, deep all throughout. A strong top four and in need of a fifth. A rebuilding outfit with many new faces. There’s been a steady presence in the face of all that – Connor Clor. Each of the past three years, he’s spent time in the 16’s. As a freshman, that was a quick Anchor Bay regional. This past fall, it was every single race, save for four sub-16 efforts. He can get it done on tough courses, mid-16’s at Holly and Averill. He can let it rip on track on grass, 15:44 at Goodells, 15:37 at Shepherd. But most importantly, he’s just there, and in Romeo’s quest for another County title, another top Division One finish, Connor is a necessary presence.
