Deepest Teams

Combine all the crews, all the points, and you get these Deepest Team Rankings.

These don’t list the BEST TEAM, that was already determined by our MHSAA State Finals. But these show which teams might have the best depth. MITCA already attempts this with their Team State championship. My version is a bit different in a few aspects:

You need a regional qualifying mark to count in the rankings
There’s extra points available for teams that have more than three elite athletes in an event
There’s no way I can limit athletes to four events
Every team in the state is included, not the 15-20 teams that compete at Team State

If Team State were to be an MHSAA meet, I hope that the first two points are taken into consideration. It’s wild to me that a boy could make the final of the D1 Finals, place 9^th in a 10.80 and not score points, but I could theoretically walk the Team State 100m and earn a point for my team. There should be a limit on the scoring places. A more exponential scoring system and additional entries for teams with >3 studs in an event, as well.

2025’s Best Sprint Crews: Boys Final Rankings

Saved our largest event area for last.

The Best Crews have been a thing around here for the past few years. They take their cues from USTFCCCA’s event squads and the World Athletics scoring system, combining the two ideas in order to compare Michigan’s teams against events in their common areas.

The goal of this is to help recognize the athletes and coaches that create cultures, history, and traditions in their respective event areas. Think about it like this: Minnesota always has great hockey, basketball hoops are nailed to Indiana barns, Texas churns out football talent, every Iowa boy has cauliflower ear. Where in Michigan does hurdling reign supreme? Is there a town where kids learn to shot put before they can tie their shoes?

2023’s explanation goes through much of it, but here’s a brief summary:

an athlete qualifies by hitting a regional qualifying mark in an event
those times from the athletes are converted into points
at a maximum of three athletes (with an exception for teams that have more athletes under the state qualifying mark), team scores are tallied up
then team scores are added across all events of a certain area (hurdles, distance, etc.)

SPRINTERS OF THE YEAR

As with previous posts, this is split up into two categories: Best Combined and Best Performances. The combined is any combo of two events (usually the 100/200 or 200/400, unless your coach is feelin’ wild enough to consistently throw you in the 100/400) and best performances are just that. To keep things equal for those that weren’t able to attend postseason meets, these are tabulated through results from the State Finals. Same goes for wind. I know it’s a factor, but not every meet has a wind gauge. Until the MHSAA starts requiring them, I won’t for these (but I understand why you must for records, which are official and mean a lot more).
