2024 Division 2 Finals Projections

The creative writing juices tapped out after months of writing, this is titled projections instead of preview. Previous iterations of these have had me writing until the wee hours of the night. I want to be my happy self on Saturday, so I’m gonna rely on the narratives written throughout the season and a few paragraphs here.

Just as regionals and other championship meets throughout the year, these projections are done based on thousands of simulated races. How do the simulations work?

Through a season’s worth of speed ratings, one can determine a runner’s average rating and the variability of those ratings. Both those factors are then weighed towards more recent meets, which are then simulated thousands of times using a Monte Carlo analysis (also described by TullyRunners here). Over those thousands of race simulations, one can determine a team’s average place and average score, a runner’s average place, odds on winning, and odds on qualifying.

These are useful in cross country scenarios, where you have consistent runners and those who are a bit more up and down. For example:

Tanner TimeTanner RatingTanner Avg.Tanner StDev.

16:12196
16:15195
16:18194

Jacob at his best might be faster than I in four of the five races during the season. I’d almost never be All-State in Division 1, but he might contend for a top-5 spot or place 60th.

If we did 20 simulations, this is how it might turn out:

I’d win four times, but I’d never have the ability to win a title like he had in Race 18. He’s usually All-State, but may cost his team a title through his effort in Race 7.

The simulations give the possibilities of those scenarios and all the various scoring scripts. A sixth girl that can pop off on any certain day, a reliable boy who always runs 17-flat, you name it. Hopefully, they better elucidate our contenders, qualifiers, and how these races play out over the weekend.

Through the simulated races, you can equate all types of scenarios and groupings. Here are the ones listed:

Projected Place – sorted from lowest projected score to highest projected score
Projected Score – the average score across all the simulated races
Range – 95% of the placings fall within this range
Win % – the chance that team has of winning the meet
Podium % – the chance that team has of placing top-2
Top 10 % – the chance that team finishes within the top-10

BOYS TEAM

Place significant goals out in the world, work to nail those goals, then reap the consequences. Allendale’s Falcons made it be known that they were shooting for six under 16:00. Their grind apparent, posted for the state to see. Here in 2024, Allendale has brought forth five kids that’ve shot into the 15’s, a sixth extremely close behind. That formula will win in most divisions and has been dominant in D2, where the Falcons have won at Spartan and Portage with considerable margins.

Grand Rapids Christian looks to be the favorite to grab the runner-up trophy and other podium spot. The Eagles are a consistent D2 presence and this year is no different, the baby blue kids placing 2nd at Portage with five under 16:40. They’re joined by a few other West Side schools such as Holland Christian and Forest Hills Eastern, along with a young Alma team.

GIRLS TEAM

The Martians entered the year as the favorite. They’ve had some hiccups along the way, sickness, poor races on the wrong occasion. But just as last year, they’ve found their best material late in the year. Late September at Bluejay is when the Blue n’ Yellow began to turn a new leaf. Five under 19:40, the girls were able to go against D1’s best and win. At Greater Flint and Region 15, depth came through in even more droves, each featuring all seven girls under 20-flat.

Coming into the season, the Chix from Zeeland East were not projected as highly. Projections miss one thing – work in the offseason, and it’s readily apparent that these girls sacrificed all summer. Their junior depth has all dropped considerable time from 2023 and Emma Drnek is reliable as they come. Mix in a freshman that’s been dropping time at every opportunity and you’ve got a team that wins in elite fields such as Portage.

The two teams employ differing methods in their victories. Goodrich relies more on depth and the ability for anyone to step up, Zeeland East is stronger up front.

If there is a chance at a podium upset, the patient DeWitt and the defending champs, Grand Rapids Christian will happily take it.

BOYS INDIVIDUAL

The lone returning champion. Last fall, TJ Hansen used a dastardly strong final 1.1 miles (10 seconds faster over that stretch than anyone, all day) to open up a large gap on his D2 competition. Throughout his career, both in Michigan and on the national scene, he’s employed those tactics. Just as great defense and pitching travel well, so does even pacing on the biggest stages.

In Division 1’s 2023 title race, we saw a first – sub-15 NOT winning. It’s a very real possibility that could happen again, as Jack Bidwell has shown the ability to challenge 9-flat on the track and bust through into the 14’s on the cross course. The recent Michigan commit has a 14:56 on his resume, and perhaps even more impressive, a 15:28 on a hot day at Spartan.

GIRLS INDIVIDUAL

Coming out of the gates on fire and with a purpose was Emma Hoffman. The Otsego Bulldog, already well accomplished in her career (2nd here in 2022), wanted more. Having embraced an uptick in training and intensity, she found herself in uncharted waters early in the year. Busting rust early, she was able to slip under 18:00. When time came to run fast, that was overwhelmingly accomplished, as she now sports a personal best of 17:22. And all throughout have been wins – Spartan, Otsego Bulldog, Region 13.

I’ve written this a thousand times, I’d only do that if it were true, Ava Schafer races beyond her years. In last year’s Finals, she moved up from 10th at the mile to 6th at two, eventually crossing the line in 4th. The same strategy was applied in track’s 3200m Final, as Ava hung back the first few laps before winning the D2 title. She too has won all year – Greater Lansing, CAAC Red, Region 14.

Each are unbeaten on the year and have experience in races of this magnitude.

2024 Division 3 Finals Projections

BOYS TEAM

Returning from a 2023 Championship is Traverse City St. Francis. Repeating is a tough task for professionals. The complacency, added pressure, and being the hunted team all factors in denying the repeat. The evidence from this year is that the Glads are tougher than professionals. They have the ability to put all seven runners in the 16’s or faster. In meets such as Veterans Serving Veterans and Northern Michigan Meet of Champions, they’ve succeeded against bigger schools.

But one can look to Portage as a crack in their armor. Jackson Lumen Christi came into the year with two frontrunners, then three who would need to see improvement in order to contend. Gibson Shore and Rocky Bolton have considerably cut into the gap behind those top-two, Avery Morrow has been a steady (valuable trait!) 5th runner. In early October, the Titans halved the Glad score through three, then had enough from depth to win the battle of D3 contenders.

These two are your podium contenders, then you have around 12 other teams that’ll be in the mix for the top-10.

GIRLS TEAM

Kind of unheralded by the coaches, Lansing Catholic has held onto the top spot all year on here. For good reason, the Cougars have some of the best depth in the state. Perhaps the greatest example of that was a state preview of sorts at Greater Lansing, where despite missing their 2nd/3rd girl, the Cougs placed all five under 20:35. Fully healthy at a quick Algonac Regional, LC placed five girls in the top-seven, all under 20:15.

In all divisions, this is the 2nd lowest odds for a projected winner, with many other teams looking to spoil. Pewamo-Westphalia won at Portage, which had the highest concentration of D3 contenders. Stanton Central Montcalm has perhaps the best top-three in the state. Traverse City St. Francis has stepped on the podium in four of the past nine years. And Benzie Central is ascending quickly, thanks to the wowing improvement of their youngsters.

As with the boys, there are many other teams that can pull off a top-10 placing, the projections show ~13 that are capable of the feat.

BOYS INDIVIDUAL

Probably a three person race, with a fourth looking to slash through any carnage. Last year, throwing down an incredible kick to finish 2nd, we learned that Gus Rohde has the makeup of a champion. Biding his time through much of the season, he’s brought his best material toward the end. Two tough courses at Chris Grabowski and Chippewa Hills saw performances indicative of greatness, a 14:58 at Benzie confirmed it.

Mitchell Hiatt has been performing at a high level all year, breaking 16:00 on countless occasions. Just as Rohde last year, we were witness to the fact that he’s unafraid of the moment, sticking his nose in the D3 race before finishing in 6th. Juuust on the cusp of a sub-16 last year, Gage Hoffman affirmatively dropped a 15:40 to begin the year. He’s displayed that form throughout the year, the largest example being a 15:41 at Portage for the win.

With those three at the forefront and pressing, I wouldn’t be shocked if Landen Styka is there to pick up any bodies falling back. He’s placed in the top-three at every single race this year, hitting the 15:40’s in two large meets at Shepherd.

GIRLS INDIVIDUAL

Two seniors have separated themselves here in D3, Kyah Hoffman and Emmry Ross. Every year, Hoffman gets quicker as the season wears on, this iteration no different. She’s run in the 17’s on many occasions, but none as expediently as her 17:25 at the Northern Michigan Meet of Champions. With the onslaught of Onsted races, Ross has been a bit more judicious in her efforts to go all-out. Still, five sub-18 efforts and a winning streak dating back to mid-September comprise her portfolio. We have one race of evidence between the two, a three second difference at Spartan, Emmry’s 18:19 to Kyah’s 18:22.

This race will also be a celebration of a squad of D3 seniors that have had their names all over the scene for years now. Grace VanderKooi, Lila Volkers, Betsy Skendzel, Whitney Werner, and Eliza Bush all have numerous All-States to their names. With that heavy concentration of graduating girls, perhaps we’ll get a preview of 2025’s contenders.

2024 Division 4 Finals Projections

15:30210

16:12196
16:15195

BOYS TEAM

Hillsdale Academy is far and away the favorite. The Colts have returned four of their five scorers and five of their varsity runners from 2023’s state championship. This fall, they’ve taken part in three meets with a decent range of D4 competition: Holly, Portage, and Class D. Each were significant victories. Fast and deep, they’ve shown the ability to place all scorers in the low-17’s or faster.

Following a rough showing at Spartan, Holland Calvary Christian has been able to move up and then stabilize. Perhaps the greatest example of that stability comes again from Portage, where the Crusaders packed up in the mid-17’s, opening up a 40-point gap on the rest of the D4 field.

These two teams are the overwhelming favorites to grab spots on the podium. Beyond the two, it appears that 3rd thru 9th places are up for grabs, then a few teams will be in contention for the 10th spot.

GIRLS TEAM

Another returning champion that is in the driver’s seat. Whitmore Lake lost a three-time All-Stater from their 2023 squad and has had girls step up in her absence. The Trojans are unafraid of competition, traveling to Shepherd on multiple occasions to face off against teams from higher divisions. At Portage and Holly, they stuck to their own division, walking away with victories at each spot.

If the Trojans were to fall, likely contenders are Hillsdale Academy and Bridgman. The two squads placed within three points of each other at Portage and have each shown signs that they’re capable of pulling an upset. For the Bees, it was Christian Comet; the Colts, Region 34. Those two races saw the teams place all scorers under 21:30, which would give the hope that they can create enough of a gap on Whitmore Lake’s depth.

I love the combinations of teams that could get on the podium. The most intriguing is Auburn Hills Oakland Christian. Their regional course ran about as fair as one can imagine, yet the Lancer trio of frontrunners were able to slip under 20-flat. Math could work out in their favor if their score through three is low enough.

BOYS INDIVIDUAL

The experience gained from track titles, the endurance gained from ultras, Marek Butkiewicz hit the season blazing and hasn’t let up. Butkiewicz took an early loss at Michigan Catholic against D2’s Colin Murray and has been winning ever since. The times have come too – 15:27 at Otsego, 15:24 at Portage, and 15:11 at Gabriel Richard. He’s a solid favorite.

If there is someone to compete with Marek, it’s Abenezer Cerone. Last year’s 3rd place finisher has won quite a bit himself – at Hansons, Brooks, and a 2nd consecutive regional championship. He’s also faced off against stronger competition, placing 7th in the ever-tough Oakland County Championship. His time there was 16:34, 27 sec. faster than 2023 under similar conditions. A definite candidate to run in the mid-15’s on Saturday.

GIRLS INDIVIDUAL

Over the past two years, Kaylie Livingston has displayed a wonderful ability to remain undaunted by the circumstances. Traveling here and there, running non-descript conference meets, heading to the indoor track in the middle of basketball season. Through this, she’s picked up a track title, indoor title, and placed 2nd here last year. She’s been the class of D4 this time, running into the 17’s in five of her past seven meets. She’s likely the favorite.

Allie Nowak and Libby Smith are two others to watch. Nowak is lightly raced, but she’s well used to these championship races, having won one of her own during track. Smith has been consistently rising over the course of the season, hitting the mid-18’s in five of her past six efforts.
