MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Man, Clinton comes through every year. This is an tell that they’re well-coached, as the projections don’t aim to project onto the future, just use the past to give as accurate an indicator of where a team currently stands. Hence, they don’t attempt to capture how much a team will improve in their next meet. The Red Wolf regional race was full of improvements, every single varsity runner racing to a seasonal best. Zachary Taylor in particular, had a great one, dropping 30+ seconds from his LCAA Final race.

Other standout efforts include:

Walker Brose, Ann Arbor Huron – with four deserving teams and a fast course, qualifying here was always gonna require one’s best effort. Walker has raced at Willow a ton over the course of his career (I count 11 meets), this 16:14 was the fastest of the bunch.

Elizabeth Lambert, Erie Mason – a totally transformed racer this fall (and really, this month). Sub-22 in all races, a mark she had never hit in 3.5 seasons of competing.

Becca Jud, Salem – she showed this pattern in 2023, a season spent in the 20-21 min. range before a drastic drop at the regional stage. I’m happy to report that this pattern repeated. She gave us a lil’ preview at the KLAA Championship before running a 19:30 here, a season’s best.

At the end of all the regionals, the projections were correct on 197 of the 216 top-three teams. Best mark yet. Also very close to the expected total, which was 198 (adding the percentages of the projected top-threes).

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

The projections expected Marlette to contend for a qualifier, most likely grabbing 3^rd. They did NOT expect a vault into second. Tough to pinpoint who stepped up, as all of the Red Raiders hit or exceeded their projected place. One name does stand out, freshman Brayden Kirkpatrick, who broke 20:00 for the first time ever. When I say broke, I really mean shattered, as he’s inches away from finding his way in the 18’s.

Where will Cara Pruakiewicz go next? Her first foray into the regional scene was a 34^th place finish as a freshman. She shot into 10^th as a sophomore, earning a state qualifier. She made the most of that Finals appearance, one of the rare ones to drop time from Wagener Park to MIS. Breaking 20:00 here, knowing her tendency to improve from week to week and year to year, I’m excited to see where Saturday and the following seasons lead.

Anyhow, I’m at 186 for 204 with regard to projecting the top-three teams.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Every year, it’s those South Christian Sailors. But that’s one of the many reasons I do these things, to capture the crucial efforts necessary in advancing as a team, racing one more week. Rachel Birkenpas, who placed 18^th, wasn’t even listed in the pre-race top-30. With regards to the pack and the scoring, her position was especially important, because if she’s 15 seconds slower (which would’ve still been a PR!), South Christian’s team stays home.

For the boys, I’ve gotta repeat Jacob Tanner and shout out Owen Moore. He’s 100% a better runner than he was at this point last year. Though there’s been a bit of inconsistency in his junior season. Sub-17’s in his opener at Under the Lights and the CAAC White Jamborees, but over 18:00 at Spartan and Bath. Thankfully, his 14^th place here was one of the good ones.

Anyhow, I’m now at 181 of 198, this year has been one of the good ones.
