MIXCSR VS. REALITY

12 for 12 on the projected top-three teams (now sitting at 138 of 150). Which was to be expected, all but one were heavy favorites. The lone exception was Carleton Airport, led by Courtney Bovair, who’s bookended her regional career with victories here. That 2021 race was a wet and muddy one, but it’s wonderful to see the dramatic improvement since then. And we know there have been many tribulations in that three-year span.

Speaking of spans, the New Boston Huron folks had a lengthy one with regard to qualifying a boys team. More than 45 years, in fact. One of the better tandems in D2, Lucas Kuhn and Luke Dulecki, gave the Chiefs enough of a margin up front to drive Huron to a win.

As a former Jag, I want to recognize Adrianna Zub, who’s been on fire recently. She’s dropped more than two minutes in the past year and after nailing top-5 finishes at Downriver Gabriel Richard and the Downriver League, earned a state qualifier with another mid-20 performance.

Sophomore Maddi Hare has been ascending through October. Going back even further to Jackson, every single race has been a seasonal best. Saturday’s race was the latest iteration of the streak, where he’s moved down to 17:09. I’m glad to see a team qualifier in what’s been a tough year for the Bedford program.

Apologies to those that were waiting on ratings, posts, and writeups. Unfortunately, speed rating doesn’t pay any of the bills, thus work was needed to be attended to on Monday, and these writeups would need to be finished today. Kind of wild though, I hardly posted any content yesterday and it was the second-highest day ever in terms of website traffic. Must be doing something right!

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Okay, where were we? 116 of 126 coming into this tough regional course. In spite of the wild D1 girls race and the many teams in the range of potentially qualifying, left here nailing 10 of the 12 top-3 teams. Now sitting at 126 of 138.

Just an example how every place and every second matters: if Kodie Snyder finishes one second faster, Dexter grabs 3^rd place and Hartland doesn’t make it because Hartland doesn’t have 4 in the top-20. Skyline makes it in over Hartland because their 6^th girl crossed the line 0.6 seconds faster than Hartland’s 6^th.

Anyhow, some huge contributions from teams that were underdogs to qualify –

Zeke Lafferty, Ann Arbor Skyline – the Eagles having previewed the course in mid-September offer us this point of comparison: Zeke’s 18:30 from the Holly Invite to 16:46 on Saturday. Quite the journey for the junior who began his career in the 20’s.

Annabel O’Haver, Dexter – who summoned her form from Jackson to grab 19^th place, a key spot for the Dreadnaughts. She’d been struggling through October, but picked the right time to shine.

Delaney Mays, Pinckney – the Pirates were projected at 53%, a favorite to make it, but with the competitive depth in Region 16, ranked 4^th. She’s improved so much year to year, a two minute leap from 9^th to 10^th grade, a minute in the past year. She’s been on a new level in championship season, breaking 22 each time out. Her contributions were needed here to help her Pirates move on.

And an absolute shocker, Ethan VandenHaute. Cranbrook is often tough to project, racing so lightly, often on more difficult courses. Barely under 20 at Linden, 20:23 at Possum Hollow, then 17:41 on Saturday.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Freakin’ Fraser did it again. In a close regional battle, every point meaningful, the small margins loom large. Katelyn Frazier stepped in front of the girl behind her by 0.1 seconds, Alice Foley held off two competitors that were 3 seconds back, Kate Molloy 0.2 seconds ahead of the next place. Grace Grupido gives breathing room at the front and Katie Cairney runs another sub-21, a mark she hadn’t hit until October of her senior year. After a long drought, the Ramblers are committed to being a consistent MIS presence.

The reality is that projecting Romeo to score 15 points is nerve-racking. I breathed a sigh of relief when checking the live scores. Thankfully at the State Finals, there will be a wider range of scores.

Loved that Macomb Dakota was able to bounce back from the County meet and claim a regional victory. A State Meet berth was probably in the bag beforehand, but there are always different levels of accomplishments to strive for. It’s great to see the senior Colton Howell step more into the form he’s shown in the past. His 16:26 was the best mark since his junior season.
