MIXC vs. REALITY

It was an even split with regard to the projections vs. reality. Projecting the team qualifiers was entirely accurate for one race of each gender and one race of each division. Who defied the numbers? A new one, the Southfield Christian Girls and a repeat, the White Lake Lakeland Boys.

First off, credit to Gavin Johns for gutting it out there on Saturday. His regional race was only his 3^rd race of the year, but an experienced senior knows the feeling of racing pain. While the Eagles comfortably made it, other Lakeland boys played their role as well. Sophomore Owen Nelms wasn’t even on the Lakeland regional squad last year. He’d been a steady mid-17 runner for much of the year until the LVC Championship, where he notched his first 16:xx ever. Saturday’s race was right on that level, showing that Nelms is comfortable in a tough moment.

Competing in the MIAC against the D4 favorite Whitmore Lake, championship moments weren’t really in the cards for Southfield Christian. But those Eagle girls sure approached this race with vigor, especially Caramia DeGiulio. The junior, running cross for the first time ever, had been >24:00 for much of the fall, save for her last two races, both in the 23-minute range. She and Ella Clarke were enough of a frontrunning duo to stay steady with Austin Catholic before the SC depth clinched it.

Beyond those two squads, two individuals brought it as well:

Claire Lawrence, Bloomfield Hills – projected 18^th, placed 6^th. With Claire’s herculean effort, the Blackhawks *almost* pulled off the upset. The Bloomfield Hills freshman had been performing at a high level all year, grabbing All-County and All-League honors, but still staying above 19:30. That is, until Saturday’s 18:54.

Micah Arlow, Cardinal Mooney Catholic – projected 9^th and placed 9^th. Par for the course for his year, but he’s such a different runner than he was the past two years. Each of the past two years, Arlow has chopped 2 min. off his best, moving from the mid-21’s to the mid-17’s. Saturday’s performance wasn’t a personal best, only the culmination of a dedicated few years.

MIXC vs. REALITY

Reality matched what was projection, at least on the team side of the action. Minus a bit of uncertainty from the girls’ side of Region 34, that was to be expected. Thus, you get writeups of individuals that outperformed the numbers, such as:

Lillian Ambler, Homer – projected 19^th, placed 12^th. Running for Illinois College next fall, Ambler has had the best year of her career. Her 20:55 here wasn’t only a personal best, it was her first ever state qualifier.

Naika Rath, Hudson – only the 3^rd XC race of her career, a race so good she gets to go for a 4^th time. If you’ve heard the name before, it’s because Rath is an 8x All-Stater on the track, mostly in the sprints, with the occasional long jump mixed in there as well.

Hunter Walker, Quincy – projected 23^rd, placed 19^th. A year ago, Walker slipped under 19:00 for the second time ever, running a personal best of 18:53. A season later and he left Sharp Park with another PB, a 17:02.

Jacob Tatsak, Adrian Lenawee Christian – projected 16^th, placed 11^th. Another huge improvement from year to year. His entire freshman resume included races over 20 min., most of them 21+. Only one of those dotted his sophomore portfolio. Many in the 18’s or 19’s before a wowing 17:37 here.

MIXC vs. REALITY

Region 26 was all chalk, Region 17’s boys did what was expected, and the girls from Marysville and Yale threw it all off.

All year, the Yale girls had shown the capability of qualifying. They were actually favored to do so, but three spots were up for grabs amongst four teams, and the numbers thought the Bulldogs were on the 4^th place end of it. Well, the numbers can be wrong. Especially in the case of an Ava Childers, the junior that broke through with a 30+ second personal best. For comparison’s sake, Childers competed here nearly a month ago, running 22:14 at the 2^nd BWAC Jamboree. Hard to fathom she subtracted >70 sec. in that timeframe.

The real shocker was Marysville. The girls had faced off against these teams before, in competitions such as:

• Brooks Mid-Season (4^th of 6)
• Muskrat Classic (3^rd of 6)
• Marysville (3^rd of 6)

The team had captured the MAC Blue and winning a conference is impressive no matter what. But the numbers were a little bearish on the Vikings. Well, throw ‘em out.

It’s hard to pinpoint one runner as all seven Marysville girls PR’ed. May they keep the momentum rolling another week.

Although the teams matched the projections, there were still some individuals who jumped off the page:

Emily Satkowiak, Stockbridge – projected 22^nd, placed 16^th. Emily has returned to her freshman form, a version of herself running in the 21’s and qualifying for MIS. She’s actually a little faster this time around, as Saturday was a PR two years in the making.

Owen Windgaston, Clawson – projected 26^th, placed 12^th. For the second year in a row, Windgaston will be running at MIS. He’ll be doing so as a much faster runner, dropping 40+ seconds from his 2024 time.

Brendan Koza, Marysville – projected 10^th, placed 8^th. It was just that kinda day where multiple Marysville athletes deserve mention. For Koza, it was his first sub-17 ever. He just seems to love a pressure-filled environment, as he delivered a similar result last fall.
