BIG HILL BALLERS

Sulley Zietlow, Three Rivers

For the Region 13 preview, I wrote that Sulley had big goals for his senior year. Was one of them nearly breaking 16:00 on one of the tougher courses around? For real though, this is a performance that launches him into the upper echelon of D2 runners. Last year’s Big Hill effort was above 17, he ended 2023 running in the low-16’s. This year, racing already in the low-16’s, we can only imagine what lies ahead.

REMUS HILL CONQUERORS

Shepherd’s Boys

The Bluejays are back. Last fall, we saw the signs of a young team who could once again transform into a mid-Michigan force. Bryce Cahoon and Nolan Longuski both placed in the top-3 all-time of Bluejay boys on this Chippewa Hills course. On a hilly track such as this, PRs aren’t common. Of the 68 sophomores to seniors that competed, only 16 achieved one. Two of them were Bradly Gould and William McDonald, valuable members of a Shepherd seven that can put all varsity runners under 18:00.

Vestaburg’s Girls

In the past three years, the Wolverines have earned two team qualifiers to MIS. 2024 had been looking like another one, but now it appears that they’re ready to make some noise in the team standings. Abigail Davis will be a factor up front, today only a continuation of her track season. The key will be what their pack can do, and they’re definitely bolstered by Jessica Stouten. Her opener was a personal best (even faster than last year’s quick day at MIS!) and 3+ minutes faster than what she laid out here in 2023. Vestaburg’s girls all hang together in the 22-23’s and they’ll go quite a way.

As always, these writeups below will shoutout someone or a team that stood out from the race. That may not be the best runner or the winning team. Perhaps a team that surprised, a runner breaking through, or a runner contributing to a team victory. Of course, if you come to me nicely and want to brag about a fellow team/competitor/teammate, let me know, and I’ll try to give them love further down the line.

BROUGHT IT AT BRIDGMAN

John Keser, Buchanan

Buchanan as a whole looks better than their 18^th rank over the summer. All five boys placed in the top-12 here, leading to an easy victory for the Bucks. Can they challenge Saugatuck in Region 22? Maybe, especially if John shores up that fifth spot and definitely so if he improves at the rate he did last year. His average time in his first two meets of 2023 – 21:31. 2024’s average thus far is 18:22.

Melanie Warren, Bridgman

Moving from D3 to D4, the Bees were always gonna be a presence. Senior Clara Fast, the Howell sisters, Shuler. And now you’ve got a Melanie Warren throwing down a PR in her first meet of the year. Her junior season last year was her first on the cross course and she was pretty darn consistent – running in the 21’s for much of the year. I wouldn’t be shocked if that consistency is a bit lower this fall. Top-2 in the division is a reach, but no reason these Bees can’t compete for a top-5 spot.
