The Rundown

Emma’s 50 Ticket post from last year focused on her freshman State Finals race, deservedly so, that was a dang good race. Her 2023 race wasn’t quite as fast and she didn’t quite place as well. But I’ll say that her sophomore year was an improvement over her freshman year.

Why?

Well for one, the personal best and Otsego school record. Her 18:03, even while conquering Mt. Bulldog, was a 30+ second improvement from the same race in 2022 and still a 20 sec. time drop from her freshman best. During her sophomore year, she was under 19:00 on nine occasions (and would’ve been 10 if Illinois ran correct distances), three more than the previous year. The real improvement though was on the track, where Emma grabbed two top-10 finishes on a non-optimal day. Her 5:02 in the 1600m and 10:57 in the 3200m were both personal bests, each over 10 seconds better than what they were when I was writing this last summer.

The Rundown

Running as a freshman on a state title squad and with his first two years looking up to his older brother, Caleb learned from some of the best.

He’s been applying that knowledge all throughout his career. You could see the payoffs in various instances. One example might be putting things together late in his freshman year, running four straight mid-17 efforts, coming in as the 7th man on the victorious Bulldog team.

A greater one would be the jump he made into his sophomore year, where Caleb took on a more patient racing strategy that led to low-16 performances. Time was one thing too, he was a high placer in his conference, county, and regional.

An even greater effect could be seen on the track this past spring, where his track times precipitously dropped, meet after meet. You saw sequences such as 4:35 > 4:30 > 4:25 > 4:22 or a 9:43 personal best that quickly became 9:16.

He’s learned to race in championships and he’s becoming super fast.

Kilian Whalen

Comeback season of the year in ’23 for this Falcon. Earned a personal best at Allendale’s home invite and was a consistent figure in the high-15’s/low-16’s.

Abatu Dykstra

I’ve always loved his mid-distance work, being a contributor on some fierce Hawkeye relays. Their 4×4 squad just won a state title and Abatu himself earned an All-State finish in the 800m.

Parker Tiethof

After breaking into the 16’s halfway through his sophomore year, he’s wanted no part of anything slower. Steady figure in the 16’s, with two top-10 regional finishes too.

Emma Drnek

Yet another 50 Ticket kid.

Eliana Stob

Last year, a freshman that made her mark in the four lapper. Regional Champion over in Region 12, then threw down a 5:17 to place 20th in D2.

Ellery Lampen

Reached into her endurance bag during track. For the 3200m, hit the 11’s in late April, stayed consistent in the 11:40 range, before busting out an 11:26 at State.

Olivia Hollebeek

After ripping an 18:54 at Cougar Falcon, her late season self showed that was no fluke. From Portage on, almost always in the 19-flat range, often lower.

Johanna Mulder

Freshman campaign was cut short, her season ending at Portage. But by that point, she had already scraped her way into the low-19’s.
