The Rundown

This summer, I felt like I’ve had a good mix of those growing gradually and those doing it more exponentially. Watching Kaelin move through this sport, she 100% falls into that latter category.

2023 represented the greatest change, both from the starting point and in how she peaked. Lamplighter has been a consistent meet on the Spartans schedule and in that opener, Kaelin has moved from 23+ minutes, to just over 21 as a sophomore, to barely above 20 this past fall. Minute time jumps, not seconds. We already knew the season was off to a good start, her closing statements validated that. Top-10 finishes at Wayne County, KLAA, and Regionals matched efforts from 2022. However, her State Finals results drastically changed, moving from 133rd to 36th, racing into the 18’s for the first time ever.

You think she was done? Those end-season heroics were duplicated during track, with a double win in the 16 and 32 at Regionals, her 1600 version being a personal best. A week later, the 11-min. mark in the 32 was toast.

One year left and I definitely don’t think she’s done.

The Rundown

One thing that always comes to mind with the Plymouth boys is that the Wildcats are a tough, grinding bunch. Jack exemplifies that to great lengths.

His career has just been building and building, coming to a crescendo during track. In the falls, he’s had some outstanding moments, most notably a championship stretch that contained top-10 finishes at Wayne County, KLAA, and Region 6, before setting a new PB at State (16:03).

As I said, the crescendo came during track, where Jack found ways to lower his 800m best (2:00 to 1:57) and 1600m best (4:25 to 4:19), qualifying for State in the latter. His season greatly reminds me of the junior year of a recent Plymouth grad, Anirudh Krishnan, both in times and the ability to run fast on a consistent basis. Krishnan just graduated from a season that contained an All-State in cross and two podium finishes on the track.

I have a feeling the similarities won’t just stop with their junior years.

Ethan Kreger

Pegged as one of the better incoming freshmen in the area, Ethan lived up to that billing. Raced to 2:08/4:45 and finished 9th here.

Joshua Macri

Freshman track season showed signs of potential. Hit 4:38 by season’s end, #9 amongst D2’s 9th graders.

Xavier Roman

Went through a similar experience to Macri, albeit a year later. High 17’s in cross turned into a 4:38 during track, good enough for points at both Region 17 and CHSL AA.

Wyatt Murtos

Consider this: In 2021, Wyatt wasn’t on Yale’s varsity regional squad. In 2022, he placed 41st. Last year, 17th. That’s a serious move through the Region 17 ranks.

Jerry Westrick

After breaking into the 17’s as a sophomore, was a steady figure there as a junior, with 90% of his races being sub-18.

Eva Thompson

Natalie Lentine

Has been able to run at the XC Finals each year of her career. Now Natalie might be in for her best experience there. A 12:04 3200m during her spring was a 20+ sec. improvement from her sophomore best.

Elizabeth Ambrlacoggio

After kicking off her career with a 24th place regional finish, Elizabeth has placed 6th here each of the past two years.
