The Rundown

2023’s Ticket (29) spoke to Kyle establishing himself as one of the state’s better freshmen that year, then admired his ability to hang with the state’s best in the D1 3200m.

Kyle’s freshman version of XC stayed above 16:00 while running a bunch of tough courses. The sophomore one competed on the same hilly tracks and turned into sub-16 equivalents each time out. Wins came at Averill, Linden, the LVC, and a Regional at home. Then when it was time to kick it up a degree, Kyle did just that, racing to 15:22 at State and 15:17 at MITCA. Those speedy efforts led to a Milford class record (beating out former State Champion, Brian Kettle) and leaving him 4th all-time in Milford history.

To make it three straight seasons of hanging with the state’s best, Kyle stuck his nose in there at another State Final 3200m. His 9:10 earned him a 6th place finish, set another Milford sophomore record, and left him #2 of all-time in the school’s record books.

When you’re etching your name on Milford’s legendary lists, you’ve gotta have a great path ahead of you.

The Rundown

I know, I know, this is a cross country ranking. But this is the first real chance I’ve had to take in Emmry’s Track State Finals.

First, the 1600m. Coming into the year, Emmry hadn’t run the 1600m, mainly sticking to 2’s, 4’s, and 8’s. She’d already run well under 5:00 at the Barnyard and in every other race, she’d won. Wire to wire, 4:57.81.

65 minutes later…

The 400m, where she’d won the past two state titles. You have to defend your crowns, especially so when you’ve earned two of them. The stagger was made up in the first 200m, then she powered to a victory, hitting 56.25, capping off an undefeated 400m spring.

35 minutes later…

The 800m, where she came alive in 2023. It was only natural given her 400m freshman year and transformation into a formidable cross country runner. She pulled off the 400/800 double in 2023, at this point in the meet, she’d already had 2k worth of racing in her legs. A different strategy than normal, letting Osterberg set the pace for the first 600m, before blasting the final 200m on the way to a repeat victory.

45 minutes later..

Another new event for Ross, one just brought into the fold during championship season. During the past few weeks, she had won Regional, League, and County crowns in the event, all a precursor to her final race of the day. Once again, patience ruled her race, letting others take the lead and set the pace before she unleashed her patented kick with 250 to go. Another win.

The distance quadruple. 6000m worth of work. All wins.

Before Sifan Hassan, there was Emmry Ross.

The Rundown

Whittling away and whittling away. Colin has been honing his craft at Divine Child since 2021, piece by piece working his way toward the top of the State.

Grandson of James, son of Guy and Patricia, nephew to James, brother of Kaitlin, cousin of Emma & Nick, Colin has been surrounded by distance running his entire life. It’s no surprise that he’s embarked on this patient approach to the top.

After a freshman year largely run in the 17’s and 18’s, his first breakthrough came at 2021’s State Finals, where Murray sped to a 16:58, a 30+ second personal best at the time. A year later, he saved his biggest races again for the end of the year, spitting a sub-16 at Region 18 then a 16:16 at State. One year after those, the same trend! 15:27 at State, his current personal best.

Patterns match almost perfectly in track as well, evidenced by June’s 4:17/9:19 State Finals. Okay, the 9:19 wasn’t a personal best, but it was a double and came off a momentous personal best in the 1600m. Both earned podium spots, the first individual track ones of his career.

I’m not sure if it’s the family culture, the DC tradition (Mike Hegarty always came through at the end of the year), or if Colin just knows how to unleash when it matters. I hope he keeps this theme going.
