PROJECTIONS

How Right/Wrong Was I?

12/12 again, making it 51/54 thus far. I feel like I had some rough projections further down the line, because I recall feeling shocked at some results. We like this for now though!

QUEENS AND KINGS OF THE POSSUM HOLLOW HILLS

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Lansing Catholic, Dansville, and Algonac

Very rarely shoutout entire teams here, but when you see a season long plan come to fruition, you have to mention it. Possum Hollow is host to two invites early in the season: Milford and Averill. The three teams from Region 26 that went to one of those were those listed above (and then a few others were from Oakland County). Algonac had three qualifiers, Dansville the boys winner and boys team, and Lansing Catholic swept the whole dang thing. Credit to their coaches for planning ahead and their runners for executing the race plan, knowing there was gonna be considerable pain in the final mile.

Claire Porinsky, South Lyon East

When one generation of Coach Testa’s Girl Gang graduates, another one comes into the fold. This Possum Hollow track is a great encapsulation of the progress she’s made. 21:48 at Averill, 21:19 at County, then 21:02 here on Friday. Way to earn those gloves and way to successfully drop time on each effort out there.

Ayden McDonald, White Lake Lakeland

After dropping the LVC Championship to Northern, doubts were out in the world that Lakeland could win this region. Someone needed to step up to prove the Eagles were the best team in the region and Ayden had a huge performance as their 5^th finisher. A quick comparison could be done between the LVC meet and here, last week he was 17^th against Milford and WLN, on Friday he was 11^th against those two. Ayden wasn’t the only Lakeland kid to perform well, but he (and Ryan Ward, Jacob Kosidlo) slammed the door shut on any potential upsets.

DEALIN’ AT DEWITT

Edison Lopeman, Parma Western

With the race up for grabs toward the back end of the pack, Western’s frontrunners needed to do their job to gain as much of a margin up front. Edison did more than his job, placing 2^nd (projected 6^th), dropping nearly 20 seconds from his time at DeWitt earlier in the year. Expect to see this name at the front of D2 in the coming years.

Jaxon Hemgesburg, Chesaning

Came into the day ranked 26^th, and if you peek at his times before October 3^rd, you’ll know why. Sans an 18:59 at Showboat Park, almost everything was in the high-19’s or higher. But he’s taken to the training and popped off three straight sub-19’s, the last of which an 18:47 here at DeWitt.

Josie Jenkinson, Owosso

I feel Owosso is underrated, a sleeper, a team that could definitely sneak into the top-10 next week. The Trojans just got done dominating Shiawassee County and placing 3^rd at Greater Lansing before a 3^rd place finish here. They’re led by Josie, who delivered her 3^rd straight top-10 regional finish and is steadily right on that 20-flat mark.

Laila Evola, Almont

With P-W and Central Montcalm dueling up front, plenty of regional spots were available for the taking. And although Laila was comfortably projected to make it, she was still ranked 16^th, so you never know. To be sure, she knocked off 20 seconds from her season best, one of only two girls in the entire field to run any sort of best, season or personal. This moved the Almont sophomore into 12^th, giving Laila her second straight state appearance.

How Right/Wrong Was I?

6/6 on Division 1, which was to be expected, 5/6 on Division 2. 11/12 altogether and thus far, 27/30 overall.

ANCHOR’ED UP

I will highlight one kid from each race for a little writeup. With Regionals and their survive and advance attitude, I’ll try to shout out someone who extended their season another week when they weren’t expected to, or contributed to a team that came in with a clutch performance. Of course, that leaves out many athletes who gave a great effort, and all of the athletes that were winners for toeing the line this weekend. Congrats to all.

Ella Thornton, St. Clair

Down a key runner from their top seven, the odds were stacked against the Saints as they battled for a qualifying spot. Those swayed greatly in their favor with her clutch performance, a fourth straight sub-22 and a far cry from her 23+ minute opener at Shepherd.

Lilianna Peace, Chippewa Valley

Quite an astounding turn of events in these past few weeks. Just two weeks ago, she was over 21:00 at Eastwood Beach, finishing 40^th in Macomb County (and 25^th amongst all runners there from Region 9). Her 20:33 here was 30 seconds faster than her County effort and her 15^th place, earned mainly through a never-ending kick, earned her an additional qualifier.

Luke Maher and Luke VanderHeuvel, Port Huron Northern

Three Huskies remained from the Port Huron Northern squad that placed 15^th in Division 1 last year. The Lukes were at the front of that and not ready to have 2022 be their last MIS experience ever. VanderHeuvel set a personal best last week, Maher a season best, and each used the momentum from that to bring in their best regional finish ever.

Ross Wallace, Harper Woods

I’m definitely no historian, but I believe Wallace is Harper Woods’ first qualifier since 1993, when Tim Mahon was All-State in Class D.
