Michigan XC Speed Ratings

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

Girls Adjustment: -21
Boys Adjustment: -14

As always, these writeups below will shoutout someone or a team that stood out from the race. That may not be the best runner or the winning team. Perhaps a team that surprised, a runner breaking through, or a runner contributing to a team victory. Of course, if you come to me nicely and want to brag about a fellow team/competitor/teammate, let me know, and I’ll try to give them love further down the line.

BROKE OUT AT THE BEACH

Just as it’s always Pine Knob, it’ll always be Metro Beach.

Hannah DeRoeck, Lake Orion

She’s been a mid-distance star during the past few years for the Dragons. Early in her career, she reached the 2:20’s and mid-5’s, then extended up in distance this past spring. Racing in the competitive OK Red, she was able to place in the 1600m and 3200m at their championship meet. I’m sure the eight lap distance raced in the spring benefitted her this fall, and gave her the security to know she could race the distance at a quick pace. As a senior, this was her first foray into XC and I’d say her debut went well, a 19:06 her first time out.

Charlie Curtis, Utica

Utica’s teammate of the week at camp (perhaps the most unique camp in all of Michigan) came through as their fifth man in a dominating victory. You could see the signs of a breakout year during track, where he reached the low-4:40’s on multiple May occasions. That progress has continued into his opener here, his 17:19 being nearly a 40 sec. personal best. Utica will get it done on depth this year, and if they can rely on a kid like Charlie to anchor down the 4^th-5^th spot, they’re in a good place to surprise again come late season.

2023 Ratings: Saranac

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.

SPED THRU SARANAC

Kyah Hoffman, Stanton Central Montcalm

I think we can officially say Kyah is on fire. Two wins in two outings this season, starting her season much like her 2022 season ended, running in the low-18’s. In her Summer Preview, I asked how she’ll fare when she undergoes her typical late season surge. Now I wonder how quick that surge might be. She’s already more than a minute faster than her jumping off point from her sophomore year.

Mark Millard, Byron Center

His past two seasons have ended with a few saunters into the 17’s, now it appears he wants to be there (or lower) for the entire year. A 17:04 opener at Under the Lights was almost 3.5 minutes faster than his debut from his junior year, then he carried that confidence over this week into a mid-16 effort here. If he keeps this up, Mark should be right up there in the OK White and a contender to qualify as an individual in Region 3.

2023 Ratings: Early Season Warrior

The above infographs are from last season. I’ll make some new ones with updated stats for 2023.

With the early season ratings, a couple of notes:

Elite, more experienced runners will always be a bit overrated early. They tend to come into the season in better shape relative to the rest of the field, and thus are closer to their championship season fitness compared to someone newer to the sport.
With smaller meets, they’re not as accurate as they may be later in the year. Smaller samples and less ability to compare makes it hard to come up with an adjustment. Which explains why I’ll concentrate on the larger ones early, then work my way back toward the smaller ones.
Adversity tends to have a greater impact early. Whether that’s heat, hills, humidity, or even all three, those less fit will tend to struggle a bit more early, possibly overcooking the course adjustment.
The girls adjustment will typically be a bit more, as they’re spending more time on the course.
These will get weighed less and less as the season rolls on, meaning virtually nothing come October. As a coach, I’d stress not losing sleep over early season times. On here, I’m stressing the same thing.
