The Rundown

What a joy it has been to see Rachel back at the front of races. If you’d like to delve more into her backstory, I highly recommend Jeff Hollobaugh’s newsletter. Back in March, he interviewed Rachel and she details why she had to miss her sophomore track season, the struggles of her junior cross season, and how she’s regained that racing feeling.

I’d like to pick up where that interview left off, at least in terms of some stats and facts. Bringing it to you raw, because solely words don’t do her justice:

2023 Michigan Ranks:

400m – 56.7, 4th in State
800m – 2:06.8, 1st in State, 6 of top 10 efforts
Mile – 4:41.48, 1st in State
3200m – 10:17.4, 1st in State

All-Time Michigan Ranks:

800m – #6 All-Time (2:06 indoors is #1 All-Time)
Mile – #4 All-Time (greater contested 1600m would likely convert to #5 All-Time, will gladly correct this if need be)
3200m – #15 All-Time (her 10:02 indoor is #2 on an oversized track)

In terms of competition, you know too she dominated there. 21 individual races in Michigan, 21 wins. A quad at the State Finals, where she clinched the 4x800m, held off Anna Delgado in the 1600m, held off Kylee King in the 800m, then valiantly powered her Purple girls toward an All-State in the 4x400m. The following week, her and Madison Osterberg blasted through 400m in the very low 60’s before each etched their name into the history books. To cap it off, she entered in four relays at New Balance, contributing to four All-American spots and registered that 4:41.48 mile, placing 6th amongst the nation’s best.

It’s easy to get lost in all these numbers. Read her interview and use it to inspire you. Her story will live on in Michigan and we’re blessed to see it unfold for another year.

The Rundown

Forever he’s been a force, his junior year is where it all came to fruition. Through his first two years in high school, Connell racked up a number of honors. Multiple All-States on the grass and track, sub-16’s in each of his two years, 4th place as a sophomore. Somers, Jarema, Lambers all graduating, a strong senior class moving on, titling opportunities opened up for plenty.

Connell seized every bit of that opportunity. After two wins in the Saline Early Bird and the first SEC White Jamboree, he raced with the big boys at Spartan, hanging with all the way to 3rd place finish, a 15:06 and Chelsea school record. The D2 mid-season is packed with teams racing against each other, two prominent examples being Otsego Bulldog and Portage, and each were substantial victories, 100+ meters the gap. Post-Spartan, he picked up win after win, an undefeated and unchallenged streak growing in numbers. At State, it was more of the same, leading the field through a pedestrian first mile (5:03), before laying down the hammer, closing his last 2.1 in 4:50 pace.

Post-season cross and spring season track showed more of that strength. In the late fall, he powered through the Midwest Regional and into Nationals, placing 14th in San Diego. Come spring, he was one of the few to double AND medal in both the 1600m and 3200m at State.

If Lamplighter is any indication, he’ll only continue his domination. The race was over quite early, as he ran away from a D1-centric field en route to a 25-second victory. It’s a dare to anyone in D2 or the entire state – can you withstand the pain and pressure I’ll put you through? We have a whole season to find out if anyone is up to the task.

The Rundown

Uniquely herself off the course, a straight up winner on the course. In addition to pickin’ blueberries, creating floral masterpieces, and constructing costumes, Jess finds time to be an absolute champion when it comes to running.

We saw this a bit towards the tail end of her freshman year, where she crossed the line first in various races such as Mel Hall, the WMC Conference, and Region 20. Then we truly saw the jump occur during a mid-season stretch with victories at Cougar Falcon, Bluejay, and Portage. Along with those victories, there was a serious drop in times, culminating in a 17:15 on a perfect morning at Portage West MS. By then, Jessica had more than established herself as the Division 3 favorite, a status with high amounts of pressure that she’d have to live up to. And by two miles at MIS, she sure established quite a lead, 100m+, that she never relinquished on the way to a State Title.

She’s accomplished so much, both on the state and national stage, the grass fields and the ovals, with plenty more to come. Her Hart Pirates have a strong tradition of championships and Jessica’s individual accomplishments continued the string of greatness. She looks to get back on that podium herself and bring her team with her in 2023.
