The Rundown

I have to be honest; I don’t know too much about Nate! But I guess that’s what happens when you evolve quickly, from a kid hovering near 17-flat to one that’s a mainstay in the 15’s. In total, Nate threw down sub-16 efforts on five separate occasions last fall, early on at DeWitt and at home, then following a 23rd place at State, ripped a 15:38 at Shepherd.

There was one low spot in his season – Greater Lansing, where 11th wasn’t up to his ’22 standard. Come spring, he more than made up for it, doubling the 1600m and 3200m there, winning both, setting a personal best in the 1600m. He may be underrated by some, but not me, for I was witness to his 9:13 at Davison. Like I’ve said with a few before, I think attending that meet as an athlete spoke volumes about those athletes. First, you’re on the ground floor of what could become a memorable tradition in Michigan. And second, you want to right the wrongs of what may have happened in your final weeks, which Nate resoundingly accomplished. I think he has a bit of revenge towards MIS, and given how Davison went, ooooh I’m ready to see what he’s got.

Top Returners

Megan Germain

Built upon her sophomore track season, running PB’s in the 1600m and 3200m. Again doubled up in Region 14, winning both, but did her 10th grade self one better by placing 6th in the Division 2 1600m.

Emma Hoffman

Placed in the top-15 in both the 1600m and 3200m at the Division 2 State Finals, along with contributing to a medal-winning 4x800m.

Logan Brazee

Primarily a miler throughout her first two track seasons. Expanded her horizons down to the 800m, steadily around the 2:30 mark. And by the time she came back to the 1600m at Region 14, she was able to run a personal best.

Taylor Mitchell

Experienced personal bests in the 800m and 1600m, also took a crack at the 3200m for the first time ever, qualifying for State in her second attempt at the event.

Rebekah Stachura

Perhaps her youth was an advantage in a highly competitive moment, perhaps she takes after her older sister and gets it done at the State Finals. Her 20:12 sealed the championship for the Bulldogs, the super significant 5th girl.

Taylor Klimp

One of thirteen girls to come away from the ’22 Division 2 State Finals with a personal best. Her 21:02 was the first breakthrough in time since Portage the previous year.

Potential Newcomers

Skylar Mejeur

Sub-13 in her final four races including a Wolverine Conference Championship.

Brenna Yocum

Second in the Wolverine Conference and finished her fall with two consecutive sub-13’s.

Madeline Goodwin

Has placed in the top-10 at the MS Wolverine Conference each of the past two years.

The Rundown

After a lightning quick progression into an All-State in Brooklyn as a freshman, Madison truly burst onto the scene during track, displaying a mid-distance magnificence that seemingly came out of nowhere. A 2:15 regional win led to more victories and two All-States, leaving us wondering what could be accomplished in the future.

After a sophomore season where she rattled off quicker times and gained more honors, her junior year is where we saw the fruits of her labor pay off. Multiple personal bests in the fall – at Jackson, Portage, all setting up for a State Finals that’d give Madison her best finish yet. But she redlined it a bit early, struggling toward the finish, valiantly crossing the line in 50th. Disappointed and ready for another opportunity to prove her worth. Which is what she did the following week, leaving the season on a slightly higher note with a 17:54 at Shepherd.

Lessons learned, pre-race strategies applied, she attacked track in an aggressive, smooth manner. She bested the entire state indoors, then expanded her distance horizons in the weeks prior to the State Finals. Multiple sub-11’s and finally getting under 5:00. To me, the 1600m was the perfect combination of her speed and burgeoning endurance, and that proved true in a championship race, where she took the lead with 800m to go, gradually accelerating towards victory.

She enters her senior season in a great spot, leading her Titans, gaining confidence from track, and yet still having something to prove.
