Woodhaven’s Maya Justice has been a prodigy for a while. Way back as an 8th grader in 2021, she went undefeated, even traveling the 2+ hours to Shepherd’s MEGASTAR meet to assert her dominance over the entire state. Her freshman year contained shows of potential, such as a 17’+ wins at Golden Triangle and Region 4, and bouts of disappointment, such as the State Finals. This spring, she’s showed growth from that already impressive freshman self, nearly reaching 19’ as we set up for another monumental Golden Triangle in a few weeks.

She’s been a quick study, quick learner, and in her final two years of high school, has made a tremendous impact on D2 jumps. Lyberty Brandt began competing last year, leaping over 5’ in late April, then winning a Saginaw County title along with 2nd place finishes at Region 20 and the D2 Finals. In her second year, she catapulted to a 5’7 outdoor opener, then showed that was no fluke with a 5’4 this past weekend. Both are better than any other girl in Division 2.

Addison Hovey is back to her all-around athletic, dominating self. She can sprint, placing high in the WMC and contributing to an All-State 4x100m. She can break ankles, helping lead the Pirates to the state semis on the hardwood. And she can jump, placing 2nd at last year’s D3 Finals and owning the 2nd best mark in 2023.

Over the past two years, Marlette’s girls have been a consistent feature in these jump crews. A major factor in their inclusion has been Olivia Findlay. Throughout her career in the jumps, she’s racked up four league and regional titles, three Thumb championships, and four All-States. Could this be the year she adds a state title to her resume? This is as good as she’s ever high jumped in April.

The Upper Peninsula’s best high jumper has made her debut! Faith Spiroff took us by storm as a freshman, grabbing a state title in the high jump, adding a 4th place in the 200m on top of that. She’s added some speed endurance (66 in the 400m) and is already in peak high jump form, reaching 5’2 on her first time out.

Best Sprint Crews: Boys Week Four

EXPLANATION

WEEK TWO RANKINGS

Hit the link above to see how your team has (hopefully) moved up.

These rankings include marks loaded onto athleticnet by THURSDAY NIGHT. They include all marks this season, regardless if they’re wind-aided or hand timed. I feel including everything is a better representation of the true rankings, rather than only including the few that would count for an actual record. After the season, I may look to put together a list of the best performances when adjusting for wind conditions.

April has been a PR fest for St. Joe standout Trey McGinnis. The senior has had a storied career – a contributor to a State Champion 4×1, an All-State in the 200m, and 4 individual qualifiers over the past two years. He’s never kicked off the season in the manner he has in 2023, beginning his 100m campaign with a 10.85, his 200m campaign with a 21.63. Both are significant personal bests, a scary proposition for his competitors as he usually gets better as the weather heats up.

There’s one major reason that the Vicksburg Bulldogs occupy the top spot and it’s Michael Wright. The senior has been undefeated this year, commencing his final track season with a 10.73 opener, then vanquishing fellow D2 competition at Hastings with a 22.00. It’s been two years since he truly competed as an individual, his sophomore year largely consisting of times above 11.5 and 23.0.

Following in the footsteps of Bluestreak legend Brock Booth has been Kirby Carsten. The senior was a straight up point accumulator as a junior, contributing to 25 points at the LCAA League Meet. Unfortunately, he was not able to qualify as an individual for State, missing out on a 400m spot by 0.1 seconds. He’s made early steps to make sure that’s not an issue, lowering his personal bests in all events. But what’s most impressive was his performance at the Napoleon Invitational, where he racked up victories in both the 100m and 200m, against competition that he’ll likely see during championship season.

As a freshman, Landon Galea took the rare step of nabbing All-State in the long jump. As a sophomore, he’s decided he’s not satisfied with excellence in just one event area. He’s expanded his repertoire by improving his explosive sprints, lowering his personal best from 11.65 to 11.02, which is currently the top spot in his division. Oh, he still jumps too, thus far undefeated in both the high and long jumps.

I know, races have been few and far between north of the bridge, but when one holds the top spot in the 100m – 400m, they require mention. Sault Ste. Marie’s Carter Oshelski holds all those spots, doing so in a manner that exceeds his All-State efforts in 2022. His best finish at last year’s UP D1 Finals was a 4th place in the 200m, running a 23.67 into a slight headwind. Already, he’s sub-24 and he’s dropped nearly a second from junior 400m best.

EXPLANATION

WEEK TWO RANKINGS

Hit the link above if you want to see how far you’ve moved up.

She’s been a valuable contributor to Oak Park’s depth, paying her dues for two years until now, her time to shine. Kelis Hunter-Young hasn’t gone the typical route of a track superstar, sparkling immediately out the gate. She moved up to the 400m as a sophomore, running 61-62 for the majority of the season before breaking 60 late. Now in her junior year, she opened with a sub-60, then blasted a 57.84 this past weekend. As of now, that time ranks #2 in Division 1, but given Coach Jiles’s penchant for developing athletes, I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s much lower in a few weeks time.

She can hurdle, she can lift, she can sprint. Brianna Rhodea is using her senior year to show the gains from her impeccable work ethic. In yesterday’s dual against Adrian, she grabbed PRs in both the 200m and 100m hurdles. Her hurdle effort was more than a half second faster than her 12th place effort at last year’s D2 State Finals. Her 200m was a FULL second faster than her 2022 best and is now the 4th best time in Division 2 this year.

Two straight All-States and starting off, looking for a third. Ti’Anna Murphy-Ryan has been a revelation for Comstock these past two years, running 12.x in her sleep, winning over 75% of her 100m sprints, and placing at the highest level. She usually waits until the end of the season to bust out the 12.4’s or 12.6’s, this spring she hit that right off the jump. Her 12.5 at the Lakeview Invite was another victory in a career full of them.

Early on, it appears that mid-Michigan will continue its lockdown on the D4 Girls 400m. Beal City’s Kaylee Locke returns off a season where she placed 2nd in the 400m to Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart’s Nicole Olivieri. As with many, her 2022 races were a gradual progression, slipping under 62 in April, getting under 61 in May, before busting out her first sub-60 of the year at State. She’s greatly accelerated that timeline this spring, hitting a 59.5 in a dominant win at Fowler’s Under the Lights Invitational.

To me, a solid freshman season is one where you can get to the starting line all season and get better while doing so. Bella Smith did that and more, competing in championship meets and scoring points along the way. Unfortunately, the only championship meet she missed was the UP D1 Finals, but her 13.49 opener in the 100m gives hope that she can make it there as a sophomore.
