I’ve seen many of the results throughout the week and most of these are waiting on more data. There’s a chance that this upcoming weekend’s meets (Under the Lights, Michigan Catholic) will help fill in those gaps. But for now, one weekday meet from this late August action.

MUSTANG’S MADMEN
Reading, researching, and writing so much, I have a pretty decent pulse of who’s who and who to expect to place well in races. What that summer research DOES NOT account for are the kids who worked their tail off over the past few months and are seeing the positive consequences of those actions.
In these first few weeks of the season, the shoutouts will often go to the first few names I don’t recognize. These kids likely are seeing a breakthrough and deserve the recognition. As the season rolls on, this will likely transition to those who contributed to team success or attention towards those who placed near the front.
All this said, a lack of inclusion does not mean I didn’t notice or I don’t care. I’m just one man and can only write/process so much.
Caleb Conner, Jenison
Over the summer, the Wildcats were projected as the 7th best D1 team. Early returns suggest they may greatly outperform that ranking. Caleb, in particular, is off to a hot start. It took Conner until mid-September of the ’25 season to break into the 16’s and by season’s end, he’d run a 16:26. He’s already broken far into that range thus far, and even eclipsed that PR – twice. Especially impressive on Cass’s tough track.
Maya Hammoud, Detroit Country Day
First cross race ever for the Yellowjacket junior! But she’s no stranger to distance running, having great success on the oval this spring. Hammoud qualified for the D2 Finals in three events, finishing as high as 9th in the 1600m. In just a few months of work, she was able to lower her personal bests to 2:26/5:14, and now she’s extending that range.
*** = State Title Contender ** = Top Ten Contender * = State Qualifying Contender Based on the 2021-2024 ratings, 2025 to be added in soon.
A slightly sane person may take a weekend off to recover from writing a summer novel. I am not that person. Much of what goes into the posts has to be built out over the next few weeks, but for now, this is in a similar format to years’ past. Enjoy!
I’m fairly certain I updated this to include 2025, just gotta find where!

HIGHLIGHTS UNDER THE LIGHTS

Liam Dewitt, Haslett
Haslett’s been off to a hot start, winning both here and at Early Burg, with Liam being at the forefront of it. The junior finished his 10th grade year with a string of mid-16 efforts and he’s already reached that level in 2026. In a D2 Lansing area with a ton of D2 teams near the same ability, having frontrunners separated from the pack will be an important quality when we get to championship season.
Brady Rappuhn, Owosso
I’ve heard tales of Owosso’s summer of work. Brady’s opener is further evidence that the Trojans spent the summer aiming to get better. His 16:44 debut was nearly a minute faster than where he was a year ago and his first venture into the 16’s.
Ruby Hoffmann, Hartland
Losing many seniors from the 2025 team, it was imperative that in order to keep the success going, returning runners would have to step. Early on, Ruby’s done just that. While she broke into the 19’s as a freshman, she didn’t do so until October. Her 20:22 opener isn’t in that range yet, but it was 40+ seconds faster than she was a year ago.
Avery Silvas, Charlotte
Last fall in Region 14, the Orioles stepped up and had a day, Avery Silvas being one of a few to run a personal best, all helping their Charlotte team advance to State. The momentum has kept rolling, with Silvas racing faster than she did here last year. Which is a good omen considering her 2025 season concluded with sub-20’s in 6 of her final 8 races.

Since Bobby Jazwinski threw down such an absurd time, I thought I’d write a little primer on how these early season ratings are calculated.
With such minimal data, as these openers are the first race of many, the reference point I use is last year’s ratings for that meet. Post-season, I try to do a little analysis to see which meets’ ratings were consistent between that meet and the State Finals, trying to find out if I’ll need to make a specific or general adjustment the following season. In 2025, Pete Moss was pretty consistent with the State Finals. For the boys that competed at both (filtering out for anomalies), the actual time difference was 1 sec. (MIS was 1 sec. faster than Pete Moss). The rating difference between the two was 7 seconds. Considering the enormous gap in time between August and November, that adjustment from 2025’s Pete Moss was probably pretty good. Of course, this isn’t perfect as there’s no guarantee that the State Finals ratings were “right”, although the projections for those Finals were the most accurate ever. But maybe they were just accurate for that day and if you ran those Finals again, they’d be terrible. I could go on!
Anyhow, with the 2025 Pete Moss ratings probably being good, we compare between the two. But we run into a problem. Field size. Either Benzie Central and the Kelly’s did an excellent job recruiting folks to the meet or the sport is more popular than ever, because the field grew by at least 20%. In order to compare year vs. year, I want similar quality of fields and parallel lines between the two on a graph.
Why? Look at the difference between the 2025’s D1 Boys Final and D4 Boys Final. If you compare the two, you’d think the course for the boys race was 100 seconds faster. If you dove deeper, you’d think the course for the elites was 90 sec. faster, then the pack was 110 sec. faster. Logically, this doesn’t add up. The conditions at MIS didn’t get 1-2 min. faster over the course of half a day. The quality of field must stay similar.
The Benzie fields between 2025 and 2026 seem similar on paper – typically an Up North championship meet plus Pioneer and Grand Rapids Christian. The major change would be Pioneer’s boys running, but that’s a small percentage in a 450-person field. We can also compare the general trends of the graphs. Peering at the packs more generally, 2025 has one between the 25th and 85th percentile of the field and 2026 has one between the 25th and 90th percentiles. More specifically, these both congeal around the 50th to 90th percentiles.
Also, you can take this really bad photoshop where I lowered the opacity and compared the general shape/slope.
Altogether, I can say with a decent confidence that the fields between the two years were similar, so we graph it out, draw lines across the general trends of the packs (knowing they’d be parallel in the case of an equal field quantity), then compare where they hit the y-axis. The 2025 (blue) hit the y-axis at 1001 sec., the 2026 (orange) was at 992 sec., meaning the boys course seemingly ran about 9 sec. faster. Given the 2025 adjustment was -7, my guess on this early season adjustment has the boys at +2.

Well, Bobby Jazwinski had to mess around and be the exception. He essentially ran his 3200m PR through two miles, then endured onto the finish, racing to a 14:23 and besting Hunter Jones’ course record. His rating of 231.4 is now the 2nd highest ever (I’ve done full seasons from 2018-on and State Finals from 2000-on). His 50 Ticket writeup and article linked within delve much into his mindset and motivation. We were very lucky to get a 14 min. glimpse of that on Saturday, and we’ll be blessed to witness what’s to come in 2026.
Some other names that stood out:
Logan Szumila, Alpena – first sub-16 ever, 27 sec. PR and 66 sec. faster than he opened here last year.
Wesley LaFever, Macomb Dakota – 8 sec. personal best and 1.5 min. faster than where he began his sophomore season.
Joy Van Wyk, Grand Rapids Christian – got into the 19’s a month faster than it took her in 2025, 46 sec. faster than her Pete Moss time from a year ago.
Eliza Selcer, Ann Arbor Pioneer – first sub-20 ever. For the folk that think Pioneer just adds talent, they develop it too. 21:35 here last year, was on the cusp of breaking 20:00 at the end of her freshman year. 19:58 yesterday.
