The penultimate individual ranking, then comes Regional and State and (hopefully winning another) MITCA time. Some rules and regulations:
The HOBBS KESSLER RULE is still in place, where I eliminate the lower third of a runner’s ratings. The reason for this is the assumption that an athlete will have races that they don’t go to the well, for many, these are jamborees or early season invites
For a runner that has 10 rated races, I eliminate 3; 7 rated races, I eliminate 2, so on and so forth
The INJURY RULE is also in place, where if an athlete doesn’t have any rated races in a month, that runner is taken out of the rankings (both team and individual)
I’m more conservative on this than most, I realize that ACTs, sickness, family commitments, soccer kickball* are all present
Of course, if their coach, their parent, or that athlete wants to let me know that they’re injured or returning, I will make an exception. But only those relations, I’ve been burned too often by outsiders.
These rankings are CUMULATIVE, with more recent meets given greater weight
As they contain the entire season, they will tend to underrate runners that have been on fire recently, but also protect those who had a subpar performance in the last few meets.
All meets linked listed here have been taken into account, even if I haven’t gotten to posting every rating
There are also some Upper Peninsula results from earlier in the season that I missed, I promise now every meet north of the Mac has been taken into consideration
These are for FUN, even if you disagree with these, don’t tear anyone down in the process
If you do, I will throw you onto the starting line at Detroit and demand you run a full marathon in the middle of XC season.
Tyler Bays, Reading: Ten races to kick off his senior year, ten victories. The latest one was at Hudson, where he set a personal best, coming in at 16:23. For context and comparison, Tyler was over a minute faster in 2021 and in that 2021 season, he finished 7th at State. As the season winds down, he’s in great position to achieve his third consecutive All-State and best finish yet.
Allie Nowak, Johannesburg-Lewiston: Thanks to efforts such as Allie’s, the Cardinals have vaulted themselves to the top of the D4 rankings. After two 20:00+ openers at Benzie and Spartan, she’s been well under that mark since. A 19:18 at Portage placed her 3rd in the D4 race and is nearly 2 full minutes faster than her 2021 best.

Nathan Jenkins, Grandville Calvin Christian: October has come and this Squire senior is making the most of his final high school cross campaign. The times are lower than they’ve ever been, the placings among the best as well (4th at Portage his lowest finish yet). Calvin Christian has a bit of time off before the closing stretch, I’m sure Nate will be locked and loaded, ready to make up for what he missed out on last fall.
Tessa Roe, Lansing Catholic: Hannah and CC dominate up front, but don’t forget about Tessa! The 2021 All-Stater reached a new level at Cougar Falcon, then proved it no fluke at Bluejay. Those mid-18 efforts represent a 30 second+ improvement from her sophomore year.

Evan Loughridge, Pinckney: Those high-15/low-16 performances at Hess Hathaway, Holly, the writing was obviously on the wall. But 15:20, that my friends, is a giant leap forward. As a whole, the Pirates had a day, Evan set the precedent up front, beating all but one of the D2 competition (or most of it) that he’ll see in 25 days.
Logan Brazee, Otsego: Brazee? More like Blazee! Logan’s been blazing for the better part of the past three weeks. She was a solid contributor during her first two years at the high school level, closing each year with top-10 regional finishes and sub-20 efforts. Beginning at Cougar Falcon, the Bulldog turned over a new leaf, shooting into the 18’s, an area she’s been able to reach with regularity since.

Benne Anderson, Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills: The D1 boys title race was unclear to begin the year, and… it’s still unclear! Benne held off Seth Norder in a race between the two frontrunners, each placing themselves amongst the legends: Hunter, Riley, Grant, Ritz. Benne’s 14:43 is his first sub-15 ever and a good minute faster than his 2021 Portage race.
Emily Cooper, Ann Arbor Pioneer: After a 17-day stretch off in September, Emily is back on the horse. We didn’t see it here in Michigan, but she ran an 18:09 competing against Ohio’s best at Centerville’s night race. That effort was followed up by an 18:07, helping the Pioneers kick off their October in a familiar fashion, winning and setting up for a monumental showdown with West Ottawa.

Colin Vanderschaaf, Marquette: Not to be outdone by his brother up front, Colin used Portage as his personal launching pad, knocking another 23 seconds off his previous best. That previous best was set at Munising a week earlier, where he grabbed a spot in the 16’s for the first time ever. As if the Redmen require any more depth!
Monique Brisson, Munising: With the Marquette and Lola Korpi shows ongoing this entire fall, some figures get left behind. Monique is doing her best to make sure that’s not the case. Of her six races, five have been of the sub-22 variety. A second place at yesterday’s Norway Invite clinched the team title for the Mustangs, who are a fairly solid favorite to take home UP’s D3 crown.
