Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

HAPPY BEGINNINGS

Malynda Lambros, Whitmore Lake

The Trojan sophomore is continuing the downward trend established last fall. Malynda began her freshman season on the outside of Whitmore Lake’s contributors, then as October rolled around, found herself in the 21’s as a crucial part of their lineup. At the D4 Finals, she busted through into the 20’s and now in her first two 5k’s of the 2025 season, she’s stayed there. Her opener at Lamplighter was a personal best and her 20:02 here far eclipsed that. Sub-20 is coming soon.

Raymond Herek, Williamston

The progress has just been precipitous. If we peek at his openers, we get a sense of how far he’s come. Just two years past, Herek begun his season with a 19:31 at Haslett. A year ago, his year started here with an 18:09. And now, 16:59, the second sub-17 of his career. If Herek can continue his trajectory, he’ll be a major help in his Williamston boys springing an upset and qualifying out of Region 14.

EARLY BIRDS THAT GOT THE WORM

Gracie Carlisle, Portage Central

Gracie’s photo was mistakenly posted during the summer preview, but maybe it was a good omen for her season to come? Her 18:37 sophomore debut was a 18 sec. personal best and Portage course PR. During her freshman year as a Mustang, Gracie hit a number of accomplishments and fast times. She was sub-19 on a few occasions, a state qualifier, top-10 finisher in the SMAC. At the very end of track, she hit a 10:59 in the 3200m, which leads one to believe she ain’t satisfied with just a PR to start the year.

(side note, I love how Portage Central has the earliest meet possible, both on the track and here in cross. Those mid-March track duals have to be cold though!)

Will Hulin, Centreville

Just building on the gains he made toward the end of cross into track. Hulin’s freshman year just kept getting better and better. He started in the 19’s, moved to the 18’s, moved to the 17’s, then snagged a sub-17 in his final race of the regular season at State. Come track, his 4:33 in the 1600m ranked 3^rd across all of D3’s freshmen. The reductions have continued, as Will’s run faster than his 2024 best on all three occasions this early season. The fastest was a 16:28 on Saturday at Sturgis, the most impressive may have been the 16:43 covering Three Rivers’ big hills, and he was 16:40 here. Considering the positive MIS experience from last November, expect some heroics in a few months.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

RADIANT UNDER THE LIGHTS

Jorga Wooledge, Mason

Another name I’ve just never heard of. But that’s what these late August meets are about, right? Scour those results for the girls that dropped into the 19’s for the first time ever in their career. Those girls like Wooledge who subtracted >20 sec. from their previous best and opened their sophomore campaign a full 3 minutes faster than where they were at this point in 2024. Let’s be clear – this wasn’t an unexpected performance, as Wooledge had slipped under 12:00 in the 3200m late in track season. But it’s always good to start off on the correct foot come fall, which Jorga more than did.

Jacob Hylton, Ortonville Brandon

The first night race in Hylton’s cross career, likely to be a memorable one. Starting his third season of high school cross, Jacob had never crossed the line in first. He’d been top-10 a few times, but never breaking trail. He’d also never been in the 16’s, so this was truly uncharted territory. His 16:32 was a personal best of nearly a minute, and like many on here, a continuation of what he’d displayed in the spring. Concentrating on the mid-distances on the track, Hylton had dropped 4 sec. in his 800’s, times that placed highly at all levels – the FML, Oakland County, Region, and at State. Two-lap races don’t always translate to cross country, but Jacob has made sure his have.
