2025 Finals Previews & Predictions: Division 4

STATE MEET RECORDS

Lightly Stressed

Girls 200m – 25.15

When I started looking at these, four girls had been sub-26. As of writing, now it’s six. Many of these girls are hitting multiple events, so they’ll either be tired or well warmed up, your call.

Boys 100m – 10.70

Morrice’s Logan Smith has already found a 10.84. He’s followed by a pair of Southfield Christian boys, Dylan Taylor-Wilkerson and Jadon Staten. Tenths of a second are a margin in sprints, but with the right wind and increased competition, why not?

Boys 800m – 1:53.53

After a tough early season, Abenezer Cerone has found his way back to indoor form. That indoor form produced a 1:54.86 and a 3rd place finish against the entire state. The record is a bit faster and he’ll be feeling the 400m from earlier in the day, two points against getting there. But I’m confident if it’s not this year, next year will certainly be the one.

Feeling Pressure

Girls 800m – 2:13.51

Eliza Keith has already found her way under this mark. She’s got speed and burgeoning endurance. Allie Nowak has been pointing to this day for ages and if her championship experience is any indicator, she’s one that can blast through her 2:14 personal best.

Boys 110h – 14.33

When facing competition or the pressure of the moment, Brady Feldpausch has figured out a path to come through. Prime evidence being 2024’s State Finals, where he nabbed a significant personal best (14.57) after hovering around 15-flat all spring. Or this year’s Jon Nugent Invite, chasing the excellent Caleb Walker.

Boys 4×1 – 42.86 & Boys 4×2 – 1:29.69

We first saw in the rankings, then they’ve continued to prove it over the course of the season. Southfield Christian has impeccable depth and speed for a school of its stature. Four boys under 11.3 & 23.5. In peak relay form, we’ve seen the Eagles come close.

Under Duress

Girls 100m – 12.30

It’s the championship season effect. Molly Brown, having already hit the EQ in a whopping 6 events, took to Region 35 with a powerful intent. Her 12.10 in the 100m was nearly a half second personal best and one that could be record-breaking on Saturday. Of course, there lies a little defending champion that’s also vying for the record – Unionville Sebewaing’s Layla Bolzman. Bolzman also hit a personal best on regional day, a 12.42.

Girls 3200m – 10:49.25

Originally, this was in the lightly stressed category, until Kaylie Livingston had to go and rip a 10:40 at Distance Night. Record-breaker or not, Livingston will surely look to add to her collection of state titles.

Girls 100h – 14.89

Probably the prime Molly Brown event. Brown has twice won here, and now this year’s version is astonishingly, much quicker. She’s kicked it up a notch in May, first notching personal bests at the Dome Classic and Cascades Conference, before smashing a 14.05 in a Region 35 victory.

Boys 3200m – 9:22.07

In any normal scenario, I’d cast doubt on the attempt at a 3200m record late in the meet. But ultra marathoner Marek Butkiewicz faces a D4 field as strong as ever and he may need to match his 9:16 personal best. I know Alex Tyndall, Brody Karg, Landon Rogers and whomever else will make him work for the title.

Boys 4×4 – 3:24.19

Fowler’s combination of hurdlers, short sprinters, and 400m marksmen come together for what may be, pound for pound (considering enrollment), the best relay squad of all seven divisions. With a student population of 175, they’ve earned the #23 relay time in the entire state.

So many possibilities. I’ll go with 4 of these records being shattered in what may be one of the better D4 years ever.

Intriguing Events and Happenings

Molly Brown and the Quad

Intentional and aggressive, that’s how I’d describe her season. Early qualifiers in six events (plus working on longer distances and high jump during indoor), you see a plan for the State Finals and for Austin Peay. Maybe multi’s in the future and to be good at those, you’ve gotta come through in many events in a single day. Last year saw Brown capture both hurdles along with an All-State 100m finish. She’s still entered in those three events, but has added the long jump, where she’s the top seed. It’s a setup of events that shouldn’t have her running all over the complex, but should have her standing on multiple medal stands.

Familiar Relays Facing Off

Check out the girls sprint relay results from the past few years. You’ll likely see a combination of Fowler, Gobles, Frankfort, Portland St. Patrick, and Hillsdale Academy. I’m happy to report that the usual suspects from those squads are back again: Daisy Estrada, Alice Luther, Gwyneth Dunaway, Sofia Alaimo-Schindler, Kenzie Fedewa, Madison Sallows, Caroline Roberts, amongst many others. Fowler has the most titles in that two year stretch, Frankfort has a few, so too does Portland St. Patrick.

A Void in the 300’s

With Landon Bennett’s graduation, an opportunity exists for a new 300h champion. Dawson Scharer and Brady Feldpausch have had their eyes on it all year. Scharer has consistently held the top rank in the division, hitting a 40.82 in early April for an EQ, extending down into the 38’s as we hit late May. Feldpausch’s competitive exploits don’t just come through in the high hurdles, as last June, he slashed nearly half a second from his lifetime best to place 2nd. Then you throw D3 transplant Grant Johnson into the fray. Johnson has two consecutive sub-40’s on his resume, winning Region 36 and placing 2nd to Scharer at Team State.

Potential Girls Team Champions

Generally, I tend to think this is pretty simple. One needs elite athletes, the advantage being more of them. Those elite athletes need to score what they’re capable of, buoyed by those who would be stepping up when less expected.

Fowler – depth in the sprints being the main driver. That depth might not show up individually, although Katie Spicer and Ella Hufnagel are very good. Relays appear to be where the Eagles will make their hay, seeded with top-2 times in each of the sprints. As an extra insurance policy, Kelcie Pung and Nadia Schafer are quite capable of scoring in their mid-distance and vault concentrations.

Gobles – from the fall, we’ve known the Tigers to be one of the better distance squads in the D4 scene. Combine that with the exploits of Daisy Estrada and Sasha Doll, now you’ve cooked up a combo that can rack up points. Estrada earned early qualifiers in the short sprints and long hurdles, a sign of podium potential. Doll has state experience, placing 3rd in 2023’s high jump. She’s back at the level she found herself that sophomore year, clearing 5’2 and winning in Region 34.

Potential Boys Team Champions

Now, now we’re getting to the intrigue.

Kalamazoo Hackett – largely because of their distance kids, Marek Butkiewicz and Sean Siems. Those two can cover ground in all individual events and add enough juice to relays. But it can’t all be distance, as Alexander Dumont can take up a seat in the hurdles.

Southfield Christian – anything under a lap, the Eagles have the jump on the entire field. The aforementioned Jadon Staten and Dylan Taylor-Wilkerson are special. I haven’t even mentioned Brock Morris, one of the better 400m from all divisions. How does SC align their entries to maximize their points?

Riverview Gabriel Richard – may not be *as* strong as SC in the sprints (though I’m sure they’ll point to their 4×1 from regional day), but have the ability to score points elsewhere. Wisdom Nwadioha comes in with the top seed in the long jump, a #3 rank over the course of the season. Early on in the sand and from the 4×8, we’ll know in the meet’s beginnings if the Pioneers have a trophy in them.

Hillsdale Academy – the hurdle exploits of Dawson Scharer and distance runnin’ of Grayson Rorick will likely dominate their scoring forays. Additional points could come from the shot put, where Joel Miller can’t stop improving. He’s gone from a low-40 thrower to a 47’+ kid with personal bests in 5 of his past 6 competitions.

Fowler – are in the same vein as Hillsdale Academy, but substitute long endurance for short endurance, as Nate Spicer is ranked in the D4 top-7 in the 200m & 400m.

2025 Finals Previews & Predictions: UP Division 1

It’s State Championship season. I thought I’d give a little preview of these athletes and how they relate to history, some backstories, then finally, team and individual predictions.

STATE MEET RECORDS

Feeling Pressure

Boys 200m – For over 20 years, Matt Wise’s 22.42 hasn’t been touched. Jacob MacPhee has been close this year, sporting a sub-23 in all of his races, including a 22.53 in Region 41.

Under Duress

Boys 100m – I’m amazed at the progress from Sault Ste. Marie’s Javonte Bellamy. As a sophomore, he stayed above the 12-flat mark, now as a junior, he’s busted through into the 10’s. He’s already slipped under the 10.95 record and given the rapid improvement, I think more is in store.

Boys 800m, 1600m, 3200m, and Girls 3200m – this is the Golden Age of Upper Peninsula distance running. Both the Boys 800m and Girls 3200m have one competitor already under that mark, the Boys 1600m has two more, and the Boys 3200m has a whopping four under the mark. Ella Fure, Gabe Litzner, Rorik Holmquist, Lucas Ballard, James Barch, Seppi Camilli. The times we’re looking for are 11:26 for the Girls 3200m and 1:58.06/4:18.09/9:35.63 for the boys.

Normally, I’d place less of a chance on distance races as when you’re competing in multiple events, you may hold back with races to come. But given the high level of competition, I expect at least two distance records to fall and one of the sprints.

Intriguing Events and Happenings

The Boys Distance Races, Obviously

And the intrigue will be centered around the 1600m and 3200m. While the Marquette boys going at it has its magnificence, it’s when we throw Gabe Litzner into the mix where things get fun. In the 1600m, the Sentinels will counter Gabe with Lucas Ballard, whose 4:17 at the Barnyard was largely on his own. In the 3200m, that’ll be James Barch, who employed a similar strategy on that rainy late April night. Litzner is the defending 3200m and XC champ. That 3200m came off the heels of a devastating car accident and recovery, and I’m sure that he’ll want to prove that when fully healthy, he’s capable of extending into shorter distances.

Strength Extends to Throws

It ain’t just the distance runners raising to new heights and quick times, the throwers are upping their game as well. In last year’s Finals, the winning throw was 46’ 7” and six competitors cracked the 40’ mark. We’ve already had 13 kids break 40’ in these past few weeks. As the UP advances 4 from each region, those 13 were whittled to 8, each spot well-earned.

No Gaps in the Girls Sprints

This is especially the case in the 100m, where a multitude of girls own personal bests from 13.0 to 13.5. At the top, you’ve got four girls above the rest: Lauren Sundquist (13.05), Leah Goodreau (13.22), Macyn Dellangelo (13.02), and Elvera Coyne (13.15). Thursday offered a bit of a finals preview, Dellangelo winning the WestPAC Conference over the other three girls.

Potential Girls Team Champions

Generally, I tend to think this is pretty simple. One needs elite athletes, the advantage being more of them. Those elite athletes need to score what they’re capable of, buoyed by those who scoring above their lower expectation.

Negaunee – a diversified team with the hope for high points in many areas. Nori Korsman excels in the jumps and vault, Sadie Rogers in the sprints and hurdles, and Keira Waterman possesses the blend of speed and endurance. All in all, the Miners have some of the best event groups in hurdles, sprints, jumps, and throws. And they’re just strong enough in distance to not succumb too many points to Marquette.

Marquette – like the boys, the Sentinel girls are concentrated on the distance side of things. Ella Fure and Maija Maki-Warne. The issue, if there is any, is that the two girls run in similar events, lessening their potential points. Marquette will have to find points from sprints and hurdles in order to gain ground on the Miners.

Potential Boys Team Champions

Marquette – their distance runners get a ton of the press, and rightfully so. But the Sentinels are so much more. You’ve got Jacob MacPhee, a potential candidate for a UP D1 State Meet Record. He brings along many other impressive sprinters, such as Ford Richardson, Kyler Sager, and Pierce Pittsley. They’re not done there, as Jacob Norman looks to be a favorite in the hurdles and Talon Smith can hold his own in the throws.

2025 Finals Previews & Predictions: UP Division 2

It’s State Championship season. I thought I’d give a little preview of these athletes and how they relate to history, some backstories, then finally, team and individual predictions. Unfortunately, no UP D2 kids submitted any pics, so this isn’t spiced up with any flavor or color.

STATE MEET RECORDS

Lightly Stressed

Girls 1600m – a 5:01.6 is definitely within Talya Schreiber’s wheelhouse, the question is: will she need it? The Pickford junior has nabbed a 5:09 this year, a mark that clears the remainder of Division 2 by over 30 seconds.

Feeling Pressure

Girls 3200m – I could write the same few sentences about the 3200m, that of which the D2 Meet Record stands at an 11:07. I’m not privy to the Panther strategy, but I would imagine that in Schreiber’s last race of the day, she may be more willing to get after it.

Under Duress

Boys High Jump – the most likely one in the D2 crowd. James Sutton’s 6’4 clearing still stands from 2013. Pickford’s John Anderson will be making his 3rd trip to Kingsford, a place where he’s shown he can handle pressure. 2nd as a sophomore, the winner as a junior, he’s already cleared 6’4 early in the year.

There have been some outstanding athletes at the D2 level over the past few years. I’ll set the record-breaking expectations at 1.

Intriguing Events and Happenings

Who is the next Danica Shamion?

The former Wykon and current Chippewa is an Upper Peninsula legend, winning 13 individual titles and the past four sprint triples. We’d never want to extend the pressure of matching that, but it’s not as if there’s zero candidates to step into that void. Of course, there’s another Shamion in waiting – Bristol, a multi-faceted one, entered in the hurdles, high jump, along with the short sprints. Amelia Fountain holds the top ranking in the 200m and 400m. Lauren Adams holds top-3 rankings in the 100m through 400m.

Discus – Hoolsema vs. Schiltz

Two different paths to get to where they are. Early on and consistently throughout the year, Ethan Hoolsema has been ripping throws. He’s never thrown under 125’, performing at a high level all spring as the UP’s D2 leader. Coming on toward the end of the year has been Josh Schiltz. Never tossing a disc before this spring, he’s moved from the 110’ range in April to narrowly defeating Hoolsema in Region 44.

Talon Hughes vs. Gunnar Bennin

0.03 seconds separated the two during last spring’s 200m, Bennin claiming a crown. The two are at the forefront of the sprints yet again, both returners occupying the #1 or #2 spots in the 100m and 200m. They’ve gotten much quicker too, especially in the 200m. Each barely snuck under 24.00 in last year’s narrow battle, now both are comfortably in the mid-23’s.

Potential Girls Team Champions

Generally, I tend to think this is pretty simple. One needs elite athletes, the advantage being more of them. Those elite athletes need to score what they’re capable of, buoyed by those who scoring above their lower expectation.

Pickford – it’s all about the distance running from the Eastern UP. Talya Schreiber is the UP’s version of Emmry Ross, racking up points to her team’s benefit. She’ll be a heavy favorite to nab 30 from the individual events, then help enough on the 4×8. In other areas, the Panthers should *just* have enough to win with a comfortable margin, Brooke Portice and Lyric Collins providing aid.

Bark River-Harris & West Iron County – an opportunity lies for each of these teams to steal from another in the sprints. Whichever team prevails may end up giving Pickford a challenge. West Iron County will attempt to overwhelm with depth – two finalists in every individual race below 400m. Bark River-Harris can do the same via their sprint relays, which appear to be favorites.

Ironwood – Aubrey Smith, UP’s Division 2 cross champ, can surely hold her own. If she can stick to runner-up finishes, that’ll give the Red Devils a chance to gain points elsewhere – such as the throws, where Emma Wardon has a chance to win both.

Potential Boys Team Champions

Pickford – probably only Pickford! I wish I could write some more intrigue into this, but the Panthers are a well-rounded team, consisting of well-rounded individuals. John Anderson, Gunnar Bennin, and Tommy Storey are valuable contributors, each excelling in a multitude of events.
