MIXCSR VS. REALITY

Per my last post, the Friday regionals ended in predicting 59 of the 66 possible top-3 teams. Great start again here, 11 of 12, making it 70/78 overall. Both the D2/D3 boys were fairly straightforward. The D2 girls was projected to be close, the D3 girls resulted in quite an upset.

Almont’s Girls gave us that upset, a tight battle with Greenhills that came down to the sixth runner. I love the cases where that tiebreaker is a senior, such as this one with Amanda Fitchett. The Raiders were put in that position by a pair of freshmen that had the best races of their seasons, Melina Campbell and Taylor Stanczak.

Croswell-Lexington’s Girls delivered in what was thought to be a tight competition for 3^rd. The Pioneers benefitted from Eva Thompson’s low stick, then received personal bests from Brynn Hurley, Madelyn Barkley, and Hailey Morrison. Gotta be happy for Hurley, who ran under 20:00 for the first time since the middle of her junior year.

Looking to the future, this Rochester Hills Lutheran NW freshman class could be something. Three qualifiers – the winner in Noel Lorenzen, both Oscar Wordell and Jack Songer dropping PRs to hit individual qualifiers.

We saw in track that he’s got a competitive fire that gets turned up a notch in championship season. Coming into the Region 18 1600m with a personal best of 4:45, Georgio Aramouni busted out a 4:36 for the win. Coming into Columbus County Park having never broken 17:30, he ripped off a 17:12 to place 7^th and give Lamphere its 3^rd straight year with an individual qualifier.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

One miss from the team side of things (now sitting at 59/66), that was TJ Hansen and his Freeland followers. One can give thanks to many. Hansen of course is one of them, allowing the green-clad folk to only need to score four. Nathan Anaya and Sam Nemeth greatly outperformed their projections. Cam McLeod and Jackson Horn ensured that the Falcons placed five in the top-25, enough to make that 9% dream a reality.

Beyond those Falcons, I was surprised by:

Samantha Brown, Clio – who, like Blake Peardon earlier, hadn’t raced since mid-September. Her 19:49 from Friday wasn’t quite as quick as her sophomore best or what she had run earlier in the fall, but hopefully it provides her with a valuable lesson – that patience, perseverance, and toughness are all attributes she has covered.

Sienna Cobb, Traverse City Central – after lingering around the 20 min. mark for much of the year, Sienna has put it all together in these last two. First, a 19:07 to finish 7th in the Big North. Knowing she had the low-19’s in her, she grabbed the 2nd to last qualifying spot with a 19:17.

Andy Castro, Midland Dow – having been on a hot streak this final month and needing to prove it all right. Starting at Bluejay, he’d been under 17:00 for four straight races, nabbing PRs in a few of them, his best SVL placing in another. Thankfully, in his final regular season race at Shepherd, he was able to make it five sub-17’s in a row and his best regional finish to date.

MIXCSR VS. REALITY

The projections were correct on 10 of the 12 possible top-3 spots, the grand total now coming to 54 of 60. But that just captures the top-3 teams, as in no way did I anticipate Brooklyn Columbia Central challenging Jonesville and placing four in the top-20. Those four:

Clint Couchman – 10^th, 60 sec. PB
Wyatt Vowell – 13^th, 15 sec. PB
Jack Gorton – 19^th, 2^nd top-20 regional finish
Owen Lambarth – 20^th, moved up 50 spots from his sophomore finish here

Jonesville’s Girls hopefully took the sting out of that adrenaline-filled boys race. Kendahl Drake overcame some subpar performances on this Sharp Park course (24:05 at Jackson, 22:38 in the Cascades Conference) to notch her 4^th sub-22 effort of the year. We also love the year-to-year improvement, as she didn’t even race here last fall, running above 23 min. all year.

Concord’s Girls were sorta unexpected, only because the work I do never captured them with a full squad. The full Yellowjacket squad was on display Friday, finding their way into second by the thinnest of margins. Really happy to see a Hannah Ryan complete a full season and drop her personal best by more than 45 seconds.

Joining Mitchell Hiatt will be a slew of Onsted Wildcats, led by senior James Bayes. He’s run nearly 60 races over the course of his four-year career, until Friday only one was sub-17. After Friday, that number doubled to two. 16:34, a course PR, lifetime PR, and enough for his best regional finish ever. Living so close to MIS, now given the opportunity to run on its hallowed track, that has to be special.
