The Rundown

Reigned in until she wasn’t. Romeo, as deep as they were last year, was afforded the opportunity to bring the ultra-talented Hrabovsky in halfway through the season. And when she was finally let loose, a likely title squad became a certain title squad.

Annie was always pegged as quick, at least on here. As an 8th grader, she had won all of her races, sub-11:45 in each instance. Coming into her freshman year, she was the top-rated freshman by my standards.

Championships aren’t won in August, college scholarships aren’t obtained as a freshman, thus Romeo had every reason to be patient. On the smooth, rolling hills of Sharp Park, Annie laid patiently in the pack for the first mile before taking body after body, eventually coming in 3rd with a 17:53. An astounding debut. What would happen when she raced aggressively from the gun?

We found out late in the year at State. Crossing the mile in 5:38 (9th), Annie put herself in a position to see the competition ahead of her. At two, she’d already moved up 5 spots, nailing a 11:23 split. She wouldn’t gain any more ground in terms of place, but her 17:28 was a 25 second personal best and the fastest freshman time of the day.

2023 was a precursor of what’s to come. Lightly raced, still mightily fast. Much room to grow, into 2024 and beyond.

The Rundown

Running for Northville, one must run with a purpose. For one, you’ve gotta be competitive enough to make their varsity squad. But when on that squad, you’re fighting off teams that want to knock you off.

Ethan’s been a part of the Mustang varsity squad for three years now, contributing to state titles both on the grass and on the track.

This past fall, I felt he really took a leap, one that carried over throughout his entire junior season. One area the ratings are good for is comparing year to year from the same invites. For much of his sophomore year, he was running in the mid-190’s, the equivalent of ~16:15. Compare now to his junior year, 204-210, or around 15:40. This leap was crucial, as Northville lost a good chunk of its scorers from its 2022 title squad.

Thanks in part to Powell’s ability to give the Mustangs another low stick, they repeated in 2023. He wasn’t done giving to his team. At the D1 State 4×8, he held off a Forest Hills squad looking to pull an upset, running a 1:55.9 split, handing off to Herger for the chance to clinch their third straight title. That was the start of a great day, the end of that meet saw Ethan run a 9:10 in the 3200m, capping off a season that saw him drop over 15 seconds from his 2023 best.

He’s shown he can step up for his team, now he’s thrust into the lead role. Trust the evidence, Ethan’s in for an impactful senior year.

The Rundown

10th at the mile, 6th at two, 4th at the finish. Holding back the first two laps, drawing even at the mile, biding her time before ripping a 2:35 final 800m. Patient racing, wise beyond her years, that’s Ava Schafer.

The first sentence describes her XC State Finals, a 17:53 that was one of a few sub-18 efforts last fall. Ava showed a tendency to rise to the occasion when needed, whether that was being dragged to fast times at Bluejay, State, or MITCA. Or embracing championship season with wins at Greater Lansing, in the CAAC Red and at Region 14.

The second sentence describes her 3200m at D2 State, another mastery of a performance. After a few hours of rest following her contribution to the Redwing 4×8 All-State, Schafer smartly held back and let others do the work. The opportunity was there to aggressively pace after a major PB, however winning a title was much more important. Wisdom. Racing with a purpose, when Ava decided to move, she moved with a purpose, opening up an insurmountable gap on second place. Even after an uneven pace and tactics focused on winning, Schafer left Hamilton with a new PR, 10:39.

Being even-keeled, being patient, staying steady. Underrated characteristics in life and in racing. Ava’s in a good place.
