GONE FAST AT GREATER FLINT

When she’s needed to truly bring it this year, she’s taken it to a whole new level. Whenever faced with a competitive field and large meet, Eliana Neuer has summoned some more energy. The last Friday in August, that was a 18:34 in Mt. Pleasant. A few weeks back against the state’s best at Jackson, a 18:29. Saturday, traveling up to race in the heat at Cummings Center, a 18:18 for the win. Nearly a minute faster than last year and the first major invite victory of her career.

BACK to BACK for Gavin Katic. Flash back a year ago, the freshman had his coming out party here at Greater Flint, racing to his first ever sub-16 and setting the stage for a championship season that had him on the cusp of a MIS podium. Whereas in 2024, this was his first foray into the 15’s, he’d already been there 4x before Saturday, reaching as low as 15:32 at Shepherd. The evidence is clear that he (along with the many other boys in this race – Flint area running has to be at one of its peaks) is well-equipped to attack this final month of the season.

COUNTY CHAMPS

If you won something at the Wayne County Championships, you probably reside somewhere in the western half of the county.

You could be a boy from Salem. A team of Rocks led by Austin Mercado with his second sub-16 of the year. He was followed by a squadron of guys that were the best in the field at their respective place, best 2^nd runner, best 3^rd runner, and so on.

From across the way at PCEP were both the individual champs – Mackenzie Dicken and Aiden Pengelly. It was Dicken’s first title, but her second top-5 finish in two years of running cross. With a month left in the season, she’s already nearing last season’s PR form. For Pengelly, it was another crown, repeating his feat from last fall. His 15:33 was the best time of the year, a necessary step as he works his way toward the final stretch of championship season.

From across 275, a team on the rise, the Livonia Churchill girls. You saw the seeds of this sown during track – four girls under 6:00 for the 1600m. It’s translated to cross, where the pack of Chargers were able to occupy spots 4-13, all between 19:45 and 20:30. In particular, we love the improvement of Maddie Vargo, a freshman who was barely above to break 23:00 here last fall to a sophomore that’s dropped over 2.5 minutes. Can you imagine the dedication it’s taken to shave off that amount of time?

COUNTY CHAMPS

For the second year in a row, the girls from Rochester. Last year’s County win was part of the kickstart toward the end of the year, a close that saw the Falcons capture OAA White and Region 8 crowns, then go onto finish 4^th in Division 1. This year, they loaded up in the front, Ella Abraham capturing 3^rd and Charlotte Jones earning 10^th.  Even with those two in the top-10, the Falcons still trailed, but found a clutch performance from Maren Greve, the sophomore running nearly 100 sec. faster than she had last year.

Also repeating was Kyle O’Rourke. The Maverick senior became the 9^th boy to win back-to-back titles, the second Milford boy (Brian Kettle) as well. His 15:46 was a second faster than last year’s effort (in conditions around 15 sec. slower) and matches Kettle’s 2012 effort for 6^th all-time when the County meet has been held on the Kent Lake shores.

For the 12^th time in history, the Milford boys. The Mavericks adopted an aggressive strategy early, a pack of red streaming through the first mile with five in the top-30. Their depth faded a bit late, but the trio of O’Rourke, Gannon Wheeler, and Todd Tobin established enough of a margin that made a comeback all but impossible.

For the first time in her history and entirely of her own doing, El McMahan. The Highlander junior has become infamous for her work ethic and high-mileage weeks. Well, guess what? It’s paid off. Over her three-year career, she’s progressed from 21-flat and 31^st place as a freshman to 18:24 and a win as a junior.
