There are 79 days of competition in Michigan’s cross country season. We’re at Day 40 right now. That’s about as halfway as you’re gonna get. As we’re halfway, we shoot past divisional rankings into mid-season regional projections.

These projections take on the same format as the rankings, just at the regional level now. Real quick:

Ratings are generated via:

• The top 67% (rounding to the nearest whole number) performances of a runner
  • Runners with three or less rated races have all races counted
• Those are then weighed on recency, meet size, and competitiveness of the meet

Those ratings are then compiled and scored as a hypothetical meet. Every runner that’s run a race is included. When we get down to championship season, we’ll start filtering out runners that haven’t run in awhile.

Yes, athletic.net has simulations. These are different than athletic.net because:

• They account for course conditions and distance
  • If you ran a shorter course, you’re likely to be overrated on there
  • If you ran only hilly, rough courses, you’re likely to be underrated on there
• They take your best performance, I capture more of the resume

Is one better than the other? The only year (2021) I compared my predictions vs. athletic.net, I correctly predicted 188 of the 216 team qualifiers, a.net simulated 184. 2% difference, but I’ll take it. Last year, I had 197 of those 216 top-3 regional teams. I like my track record. I ain’t no a.net hater either, as I bet I spend more time on there than any human in the US.

These use meets through the weekend. There are a few recognizable names that debuted during this week, you’ll be included come regional time.

Anyhow, as I’ve said on my division rankings, these are for fun. I’m positive in my writings toward everyone, you can be cool toward me. Enjoy.

Any Surprises?

Mesick

The Redmans up front are such an advantage. While some teams struggle to have a front runner like Kyle or Ty, only a few in the D4 realm have two. Only needing to score three will be a welcome strategy come championship time.

Michigan Lutheran Seminary

Forever the case in D4, newcomers and unexpected additions have great consequence in potential regional results. 10^th grader MJ Flowers had some rough experiences to start, but has gotten the hang of it recently, ripping off four consecutive 18 min. efforts.

Genesee Christian

Steadily moving up, Ian Ferguson has had the best season of his career thus far. Sub-18 in his first five races, an 18:06 in an equivalent effort at Holly, and now he sits at a potential top-10 spot in this region, enough for his Soldiers to move into the qualifying mix.

Lutheran Westland

Mason Johnson has moved from a kid that barely got under 20-flat to one that’s been solidly in the 18’s for the past few races. As such, his Warriors have benefitted, moving into a secure 3^rd position.

Movin’ Up

Spencer McNitt, Maple City Glen Lake

Much was expected of the young Laker freshman and he’s shown to be up for it. His Glen Lake team won their first NWC Jamboree in the athletic.net era and he led the way up front, threatening the 16’s on the tough Burdickville Rd. course.

Brady Edwards, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart

A traditional D4 power is back, Brady making sure of that. Prior to this fall, an 18:18 5k was the quickest on his resume. Early in the season, he’s already whittled that down to 16:42.

Elias Baldwin, Decatur

Made an impact in the 800m this spring, showing discipline that’s carried over to cross. He’s dropped more than a minute from his sophomore best and has earned a pair of 3^rd place SW10 finishes, the lowest conference placings of his career.

John Keser, Buchanan

Gradually moved through 2024, dropping a few seconds at a time before ending up with a 16:55 at the State Finals. He’s wasted little time in 2025, getting there twice already.

Tyler Leach, Otisville LakeVille

2024’s MMAC Champion and All-Stater just crossed the line in a career first, a 15:57 in the second league jamboree. Earning big goals and racking up four wins, his senior year is setting up for a memorable finish.

James Tennes, Lansing Catholic

The track times had been flashed plenty over his first two years in high school, 2:03 and 4:37 respectively his 800m and 1600m PRs. But he had only one race on the grass to speak of. He’s more than made up for it during his 11^th grade fall, hitting back-to-back 16:xx’s as the Cougars aim for MIS glory.

Whitehall

Robert Jazwinski has been impactful, the Vikings only needing to score four will be a welcome advantage come regional time. I gotta imagine his presence has helped other Whitehall boys, Rex Pumford being a prime example. The sophomore is racing much faster than he had at this point in time last year, hitting a 17:17 at Spartan when his September freshman best was an 18:35.

Detroit Country Day

The summer was spent appearing that the Yellowjackets were in a close battle for third. The season has produced a different result, what looks to be a secure spot in the top-3. Country Day can thank Jack Hincks, whose sophomore introduction to the sport has featured numerous performances around the 17 min. mark and below.

Yale

The Bulldogs have dropped some serious points in the projections and a large part of that has been Brady VanConant. The sophomore is on the cusp of breaking into the 16’s and is 2/2 on BWAC victories in 2025.

Movin’ Up

Carson Wood, Sparta

Carson’s been capitalizing on a track season that saw him hit PB’s in the 800m and 1600m. He’s been in the 16’s pretty much all fall, including a 16:10 this past weekend at Cedar Springs.

Ben Verlin, Grand Rapids South Christian

Both boys and girls, the Sailors seem to be the most improved overall outfit in the Lower Peninsula. Verlin is one of a bunch, dropping from a sophomore season spent in the high-17’s to a junior one containing all but one race in the 16’s.

Logan Cristian, Parma Western

One of a bevy of Panther youngsters and one that just obtained a monumental breakthrough. I’m the biggest proponent of times not mattering in cross, but the first freshman to hit a 15 on the scoreboard is undoubtedly impressive.

Parker Smith, Adrian

Promise was plenty, as Smith’s 8^th grade self won the Lenawee County Championship and all of the SEC Jamborees. I’m happy to report that the promise has translated. A 16:57 on the new Forest Akers course shows Smith has the necessary toughness for high school XC.

You’d think with the graduation of Seth Conner, Mason Lucas, and many other influential members that the Wildcats would skip a beat. Nope, as Ethan Burks has quickly acquitted himself to the sport and Carter Cooke has made up for lost time.

Detroit Catholic Central

Following a solid freshman campaign where he broke 17:00 late, Brady Glon was expected to be a factor in the regional standings. But not to this degree, where he’s been in the 16’s on multiple occasions, the top-ten of almost all his races, and just set a 30+ sec. PR over the Holly hills.

Troy

It’s a close battle in upper Oakland County and the first OAA Red Jamboree was a prime example – 2^nd through 5^th place separated by a mere 14 points. Minor improvements can help, as can significant ones, such as Asa Konwinski breaking into the 16’s much, much earlier than he had as a freshman.

When it comes time to pop one, watch out. The Bobcat freshman has hung in there on the tough courses of Michigan – Holly and Linden for example, nearly finding a sub-16 on the former.

Matii Tarekegn, East Kentwood

Ended last fall on a positive note and has kept the momentum rolling. At last fall’s State finals, Tarekegn raced to a 16:07, a significant personal best. He’s eclipsed that on four occasions this year, most notably a 15:29 at Ottawa Hills.

Hudson Doll, Ann Arbor Skyline

Much accomplished in the middle school track scene, he’s become quickly acquainted to high school cross. PRs each and every time out, including a recent 16:07 at Jackson.

The progression through the years has been steady but significant. 21+ minutes as a freshman, 19’s, 18’s, then 17’s. In 2025, every single race the Pilot senior has run has been of the 16 min. variety.
