The Rundown

Throughout the ’22 season, here’s how the Pirates moved up in terms of their ranking:

Week 2: 18th
Week 3: 17th
Week 4: 5th
Champ. Season: 5th
County Week: 3rd
League Week: 3rd

And then in the Division 2 State Finals, Pinckney placed 3rd. Who was the main driver behind their quick descent? Paul.

What began as a season flirting with the 17-min. barrier quickly turned into one where he was capable of stepping onto the speedway podium. His 16:10 at Portage shredded his previous best (16:34 @ State the previous year) and set the stage for a championship season where he had six excellent races, culminating in an All-State spot and 15:33 at Shepherd.

During track, we saw him start at a much better place, running sub-4:30/10:00 early, which turned into someone who qualified for State in both events. He unfortunately wasn’t able to compete as an individual, but he managed to do what others ranked before him have done – right those wrongs. He did that to the tune of a 9:10 for a full two miles at New Balance.

I don’t know what the starting point will be this fall, but if he starts out quick, I don’t even wanna know where he ends up at.

Top Returners

Emmerson Clor

Performed to the same high level during track as she did cross, placing 2nd in the Macomb County 1600m and 2nd in the Region 10 3200m.

Violet Hrabovsky

Not only able to move up during cross, she showed a penchant for progression during track as well. Her best finish at 2021’s Regional was a 13th spot in the 800m. Performed much better at 2022’s version, winning the 1600m.

Natalia Guaresimo

Her 11:04 in the 3200m ranked #2 amongst all Michigan freshman girls, behind, um, Emmerson.

Gracie Youngblood

Tenacious improvement this spring, whittling her 3200m down by 25 seconds to 11:40. Placed in the top-8 at both Region 10 and Macomb County in the event.

Olivia Purdy

Quite a change from her 2022 season at Eisenhower, slashing her 1600/3200m times by 40+ seconds. Will likely work together with Gracie to displace and push back many varsity competitors of other teams.

Maya Muskan

Only three 800m efforts this past spring, but they were all blazing fast for a freshman. 2:23 at Macomb County was the last of ‘em, placing 2nd.

Potential Newcomers

Annie Hrabovsky

I wish we would’ve gotten a Kaylie Livingston vs. Annie showdown last year, hopefully it’ll happen in the next few years. Undefeated as an 8th grader, all her efforts in the 11’s, all by a margin of 35+ seconds.

Ella Thibodeau

Closed her middle school season with a 13:15 over in Zone 3.

The Rundown

I can keep going on those accolades if you want?

Do I even need to?

Emmry’s greatness spans from racing on grass to burning up the track. Did we have any clue that she’d turn into a mid-distance beast? Maybe, if you look back to middle school, she was running 28’s for the 200m, which with the proper development could turn into a sub-60 girl on the track.

Well, that proper development occurred extremely quickly. As a freshman, she was able to speed toward a sub-60 by late April, then clinched a number of titles. Region 25, the LCAA, Lenawee County, before matching her regional performance with a 57.93 winner on the track. Personally, I don’t think the 400m has much correlation to the 5k, but Emmry has shown my personal opinion to be completely incorrect. Using that long sprint endurance, she was able to extend up to 5k, holding sub-6’s for the longest time. She did so aggressively, such as at Jackson, extending an enormous lead from early on. And she did so patiently, running even splits at MIS, holding on for 3rd place.

That endurance built up during cross paid off in the spring, where she not only bettered her 400m best, but pulled off one of the tougher doubles you’ll find, outdueling Madison Osterberg in the 800m. These two girls are only naturally back-to-back on here, as their greatness pushes the other. If you’re an XC fan in southern Michigan, you’ll have to be at Jackson, Region 23, and State, watching the two duel, and Emmry put on forth her best material.
