Henry Dixon

For comparison’s sake, one could look to:

Place – moved from 23rd at Regionals to 7th
Races Run – on the varsity State squad as a sophomore after sitting out State as a freshman
Time – from 17:39 to 16:21 at the MITCA meet

Brendan Hoving

Stupendous growth not only in cross but in track too. Brendan went from 4:49 to 4:24 in the 1600m and 10:21 to 9:39 in the 3200m, qualifying for State in the latter.

Liam Hinman

Word on the street is that he may be THEEEE Division 2 sleeper. After summoning a 1:55 split at State, he’s been leading the team over the summer, setting camp records, knocking down marks from some illustrious names.

Cooper Jacobsen

Showed promise in the spring of ’22, pulling off a 2:07 in the 800m as a sophomore. Extended that up to all distance events, grinding his way to 4:39 and 10:05 this spring.

Tate Miller

A quick learner to the cross scene. Opened his career with a mid-19 effort at Under the Lights, then ripped off seven consecutive 17-min. efforts.

Tyler Endres

Didn’t get to run many four-lappers during track, though I think his 4:49 to close (and win the OK Gold JV race) may show something for cross. Past that 4:49, he was able to compete in a few 800m’s as well, dropping down to 2:03, ranking 20th in Division 2 amongst 9th and 10th graders.

Potential Newcomers

Hayden Deckrow

Sub-12 in five of his six 8th grade races, including top-10’s at Zone 6 and in the WMMSC.

Top Returners

Kamryn Lauinger

Showed some strength during track, especially in the 3200m. Kam won all but two of her races, including the FML and Region 19.

Layla Jordan

More of a speedster on the track (check out those 800m times this summer!), but still displays enough endurance to get it done in the fall. Sub-20 in six of her final seven races.

Avery Byrne

Was the 3rd or 4th girl during October, one of the better mid-pack runners in Division 2. Also broke into the 19’s for the first time ever, placing 4th in the FML.

Alexis Waring

Was right there with Avery for much of the year, getting back into the 19’s for the first time since her freshman year.

Isabella Dunn

Closed her freshman year with some solid efforts. Low-20 times at Greater Flint and the FML Championship stand out.

Natalie Steward

One of the rare ones to set their actual PB at the State Finals. As a result of her 20:36, she was the 5th girl on their 7th place squad.

Madeline Dunn

Was in the 21’s for eight of her final nine races.

Potential Newcomers

Baylor Lauinger

Only one loss during her 8th grade season (to the sensational Kaylie Livingston, so is that really a bad thing?). Won championship meets such as Greater Flint, Flint MS League, and Zone 4. Even got into the 11’s up at Midland’s Zone 4.

Claire Brown

Another one who saved her best for that Zone 4 race, speeding her way to 12:08 and a 4th place finish.

Grace Mahaffy

Top-10 in Greater Flint for each of the past two seasons, a steady low 13-min. girl throughout.

Grace Trudeau

Low-13’s on a couple of occasions, namely Greater Flint and Zone 4.

Alivia Ottinger

Progressed from the 15’s to the high-12’s, hitting those marks at Greater Flint and Zone 4.

For those who’ve read this far and think, “maybe Zone 4 and Greater Flint were short/fast”, consider this: Goodrich won Greater Flint with 30 points to Linden’s 66, they finished 2nd to Hartland at Zone 4, beating a host of D1 feeder schools along the way.

The Rundown

The frontrunner of the Giants, the underrated, underappreciated team of Kalamazoo County. Jasper’s junior year was one of stupendous growth, both in time and place. Following a sophomore season comprised of many mid-16 efforts, Jasper took another leap forward. He transformed into an athlete that primarily raced in the 15’s, getting there six times over the course of the 2022 season. Among those six were a top-5 finish at Portage and a win against all SMAC competition. The big one though was his 15:22 in Region 3, leading his KC followers to an upset regional victory, one they’ll hope to repeat this year.
