The Rundown

She’s been dominating ever since she’s stepped onto the Macomb County courses. Freedom Hill, Eastwood Beach, Metro Beach, Anchor Bay, you name the course, she’s picked up a win. All three of Jayden’s high school seasons, she’s been in the 17’s, and usually that’s near the end of the year. How she has balanced it all has been astounding to me. With her 16 Ways teammates, performing during summer track and winter track, with her Dakota teammates, performing during outdoor and cross country. This track season was unfortunately a bit injury plagued, but she made the smart decision in shutting things down before they got out of hand. Now she’s fresh and hungry as ever to defend all her crowns.

The Rundown

In Paul Moore’s writeup, I mentioned how Paul’s mid-season rise coincided with Pinckney’s uptick as a team. While Paul was coming into his own, Evan was holding down the fort early on. I always like to think I see signs that someone will turn into a future star, I didn’t see it with Evan. Solid, yes, but nothing like the runner that he’s become. High-16 runner as a sophomore, a slightly better track season that spring. Likely to be a contributor, but not to the All-State and D1 type runner he is today.

One aspect that does stand out is his toughness. A notable result from his sophomore year is his regional performance, in the muck at Lake Fenton, he punched way above his weight, placing 3^rd. Toughness is necessary for cross country, perhaps even more important than endurance or footspeed, and Evan showed it in droves during his junior year. Sub-16’s at the hilly Heritage Park and Hess Hathaway, the latter of which clinching the Region 16 crown. Moving up 30+ places to crack the top-10 at State. Racing only three times in the 1600m (at least from athletic.net) before blasting a 6 second PB to qualify for State, where he placed 7^th. Tons of toughness.

The Rundown

These ratings can do a lot of things. They can project the future, compare against competitors, show progression throughout time. Sadly, they cannot adjust for losing your shoes. Natalie’s 4^th place finish at MIS last year featured a missing shoe for over 80% of the race, though through that adversity, the race showcased her trusty Feetures socks and her mental toughness.

What may have been frustrating in November was hopefully forgotten about by June, and I’m sure her state title on the track helped a ton. Natalie added quite a bit of speed to her repertoire, reducing her best 800m by 8 whole seconds, which undoubtedly aided her other events. I’ve always regarded her as a little more of a distance girl, but breaking into the 2:1x’s dispelled that notion. Not as if her distance events suffered, big improvements came too (5:10 to 4:58 and 11:04 to 10:40). The most noticeable jump was in her State Finals, where she doubled her individual All-State efforts, moving up in place as well. She outlasted the field in the 3200m, winning it all, her first State Title ever, showing what she can do with two shoes and a ton of heart.
