The Rundown

I can keep going on those accolades if you want?

Do I even need to?

Emmry’s greatness spans from racing on grass to burning up the track. Did we have any clue that she’d turn into a mid-distance beast? Maybe, if you look back to middle school, she was running 28’s for the 200m, which with the proper development could turn into a sub-60 girl on the track.

Well, that proper development occurred extremely quickly. As a freshman, she was able to speed toward a sub-60 by late April, then clinched a number of titles. Region 25, the LCAA, Lenawee County, before matching her regional performance with a 57.93 winner on the track. Personally, I don’t think the 400m has much correlation to the 5k, but Emmry has shown my personal opinion to be completely incorrect. Using that long sprint endurance, she was able to extend up to 5k, holding sub-6’s for the longest time. She did so aggressively, such as at Jackson, extending an enormous lead from early on. And she did so patiently, running even splits at MIS, holding on for 3^rd place.

That endurance built up during cross paid off in the spring, where she not only bettered her 400m best, but pulled off one of the tougher doubles you’ll find, outdueling Madison Osterberg in the 800m. These two girls are only naturally back-to-back on here, as their greatness pushes the other. If you’re an XC fan in southern Michigan, you’ll have to be at Jackson, Region 23, and State, watching the two duel, and Emmry put on forth her best material.

Top Returners

Alex Thole

Year-to-year improvement evident in his OK White finishes. As a freshman, he averaged 12^th place. As a junior, he averaged a 5^th place finish.

Ryan Brinker

In late May, nearly matched his 4:26 personal best, impressive because he missed most of the spring with a stress reaction. Given a full training cycle, expect him to return to the All-State form he displayed late in his junior year.

Jonah Workman

The evolution of a kid hanging on to a kid pushing the pace. His 16:04 at Portage was a major breakthrough. Showing great emotional maturity, he didn’t let that get to his head, achieving top-10’s at the final OK White Jamboree and Region 12. Watch him grow under Coach Collette’s careful guidance.

Davis Christy

The all-important 5^th man on EGR’s State Title squad. He’ll likely move up a spot, but the role remains the same, the need for consistency in pressure-packed races. He’ll draw on last year, running three of his better races to close the year, mid-16 efforts in the OK White, Region 12, and State.

Jack Edison

Over the course of two months, worked his way down from the low-18’s to the low-17’s. Not on the athletic.net profile, but did split a 2:05 at Division 2’s State Finals, showing that those low-17’s may turn into something a bit faster.

Carter Kegle

Flashed talent early in his career, breaking 18:00 as a freshman and hitting a 17:16 at 2021’s State Finals. Junior year cut short by injury, but if his commitment to swim for West Virginia is any indication, this all-around athlete will return to that form.

Combine that 11:15 speed with the Pioneer culture and you may be looking at someone special.

The Rundown

I have to be honest; I don’t know too much about Nate! But I guess that’s what happens when you evolve quickly, from a kid hovering near 17-flat to one that’s a mainstay in the 15’s. In total, Nate threw down sub-16 efforts on five separate occasions last fall, early on at DeWitt and at home, then following a 23^rd place at State, ripped a 15:38 at Shepherd.

There was one low spot in his season – Greater Lansing, where 11^th wasn’t up to his ’22 standard. Come spring, he more than made up for it, doubling the 1600m and 3200m there, winning both, setting a personal best in the 1600m. He may be underrated by some, but not me, for I was witness to his 9:13 at Davison. Like I’ve said with a few before, I think attending that meet as an athlete spoke volumes about those athletes. First, you’re on the ground floor of what could become a memorable tradition in Michigan. And second, you want to right the wrongs of what may have happened in your final weeks, which Nate resoundingly accomplished. I think he has a bit of revenge towards MIS, and given how Davison went, ooooh I’m ready to see what he’s got.
