It’s now September and we’re hitting the meat of the schedule. The early season excitement has faded and teams are hitting the books, barreling toward the peak of their training, and frequently lacing up spikes. I just got back from a weekend of trail running out at Woodstock and wow is it great to be back out there. As such, no rating work was done over the weekend and you’ll get a ton of posts over the next few days. Next week, following the major meets of this weekend, will be our first batch of rankings.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

AVERILL’S ACES

El McMahan, Rochester Adams

Out here showing those summer 5k’s and miles were for real. El has only built on the strength she showed in track (top-8 finishes in indoor/outdoor, plus a stupendously negative splitted 10:58). Her 18:27 victory over these Possum Hollow hills displays the way she’s grown in the past year, as she stayed in the 19’s on her trips around this course last fall.

Gannon Wheeler, Highland-Milford

A shining example of how one can grow in the Maverick program. Gannon was on the high side of 18:00 through the first two years of his career. He broke 18:00 for the first time here last year, staying a consistent figure in the 17’s throughout the ’24 season. A 17:05 here is extremely close to his lifetime best (16:58 at Jackson), a course PR, and a sure sign that faster marks will come toward the end of the year (Milford’s next 5k is in a month, my kinda schedule!).

It’s now September and we’re hitting the meat of the schedule. The early season excitement has faded and teams are hitting the books, barreling toward the peak of their training, and frequently lacing up spikes. I just got back from a weekend of trail running out at Woodstock and wow is it great to be back out there. As such, no rating work was done over the weekend and you’ll get a ton of posts over the next few days. Next week, following the major meets of this weekend, will be our first batch of rankings.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

BATH BREAKOUTS

October Harns, Okemos

Her opener at Lansing Catholic was a sign she had returned to her cross country form. Her first 5k here at Bath was more than a sign, an affirmative statement that October had arrived back to her late-season form from 2024. During last year’s championship season, Harns placed 10^th at Greater Lansing, 5^th at Region 2, and top-50 at State, all while considerably dropping her personal best down to the low-18’s. Her 18:34 here was 40 sec. faster than last September’s race, so you gotta imagine she’ll shine when she hits her namesake month.

Aiden Marple, DeWitt

This is always a time of the year where I learn new faces, names of athletes that are quickly learning the sport or rapidly moving up in the world. And Aiden is just that, hitting the 16’s for the first time ever a few weeks back at Saranac, then continuing with more sub-17’s at Marauder and here at Bath. A far cry from 2024’s fall, where he took until late September to even climb into the 17’s.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

BRUDER’S BEASTS

Ann Arbor Pioneer Girls

The Purple Crew has always had the frontrunners, but the question mark coming into the year was their depth. With returners such as Bridget Kerber and Nina Moore already running in the low-19’s, a bit of the depth was answered. Couple that with freshmen Laura Forsyth and Kiera Von Blon, already well accustomed to the high school distance, even more was answered. For the final piece, Lizzie Wernimont, an 11^th grader running cross for the first time. It ain’t just two girls to round out their scorers – the Pioneers have plenty of options to pop one in a big spot.

Alma Boys

East Grand Rapids laid down the first impressive D2 performance, now Alma responded. Zeke Baltierra (PR in the win) and Thomas Larson were known qualities, as always the meat of their lineup will be the determining factor of their late-season honors. Early on, the Panthers are on a good path. Personal bests across the board – from the freshman Nico Lebron, to his experienced brother Luca Lebron, then to Samuel Johnson coming off an outstanding freshman year. Kevin Terpstra found his way back to the 16’s and we saw our first Elijah Baltierra appearance. Gonna be a fun one in D2.

Chloe Mazza, Cadillac

Just expounding on the potential she displayed last fall. At the tail end of her freshman season, Mazza busted out consecutive mid-19 performances, both at the Big North Championship and at the Benzie Regional, a nice lil’ 10-day stretch. If the early season evidence is any indicator, that stretch might be elongated. Two 19:3x’s, both here and at Oiler. Mazza’s rise gives the Vikings a formidable top-3 and furthers their strength in a bid for a top D2 finish.

Murphy Wagner, Saginaw Swan Valley

2025 has been a great welcoming back to the fold. Wagner spent much of his sophomore year in the 16’s, qualifying for State here and placing in the top-100 at MIS. Unfortunately, he spent much of his junior year on the sidelines. To commence his senior season, he’s returned to that sophomore form. Time has been dropped in each meet, from a 17:01 at Early Burg (on a course that ran very slow) to now a 16:25 (PR!) yesterday. Good to see this guy back around.

Malynda Lambros, Whitmore Lake
