Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

FAST AND EARLY

Julia Bambach, Holly

Girls are improving rapidly over in northern Oakland County. Maddie Lindley is one example of Broncho progress, Julia Bambach is another. Save for one race at Cadillac, Julia was always over 22 min. during her freshman year. She’s jumped multiple levels already, her 20:25 ending up as more than an 80 sec. personal best, with much room to grow over the course of the season.

Jayden Fox, Saginaw Valley Lutheran

Two meets in and it’s appearing that Jayden is set to finish what he started during track. Picking himself up off the mat after he was unable to compete at MIS last fall, Fox earned a 3200m qualifier with his 10:03, 2^nd place finish from the Vassar Regional. The good vibes have continued into this late summer, his 16:19 here being a lifetime best. Fox has set a solid foundation for what can be his best season yet.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

Girls Adjustment: +10
Boys Adjustment: +12

Tough to get a reading on the adjustment for this one. This is a new course, a remade meet, and even if I wanted to compare to previous Oakland races, those were 4k. Many of the racers here ran at Lamplighter and threw down much faster times, a total of 57 boys averaging 88 seconds faster and a total of 84 girls averaging 105 seconds faster. Does this mean that Oakland was significantly shorter? No, because the conditions were ideal, runners learn a ton from the first to the second race, Lamplighter was humid even at 11pm, and the calculations take more of the quicker runners into account. Long story short, this course seems to be a little fast, but we won’t be able to confirm until later in the season.

GOLDEN GRIZZLIES

I usually try to pick the corniest title possible, Oakland did the work for me with this appropriate name for the return of their annual invite.

Claire Galas, Novi

During Claire’s freshman year, she was able to set personal bests on five different occasions. As she got a hang of the distance, a massive one to start – 23:28 to 21:47. By early October, she’d found her way in the 20’s. A few weeks later, right on the doorstep of the 19’s. Nearly a year has passed and the trend has continued, as Galas dropped more than a minute from her Lamplighter opener and dropped deep into the 19’s.

David Dubeck, Clarkston

I’ll remind you: three years ago, Dubeck wasn’t even running cross country. Two years ago, he managed to compete in three meets, staying well above 18 in all three. The past two years, he’s made quick learning of the competitive side. Last fall, he raced with his Wolves at the State Finals, flashed a 15:59, and placed 12^th in Oakland County. His 15:50 on Friday was a significant personal best and first ever win on the grass.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

CORUNNA’S EARLY RISERS

Leah Humphrey, Grand Blanc

If you compare how Leah opened her freshman season to what she did on Tuesday, you’ll see a world of difference. Back a year ago, Humphrey began her career with a 23+ min. performance at Huron Meadows, but then progressed towards a ton of mid-20 efforts and even a 19:42 to place 11^th in the SVL. A year has passed and she’s started where she left off, the 20:26 being the 6^th fastest time of her career thus far.

Ryan Rathsburg, Flint Powers Catholic

Lennox Naswell and Bryce Gross got their own writeups, even Tommy Beiter and Caleb Carignan got a little love. But nothing in the summer was written about Ryan, who looks to be an essential member of the Charger top-five. He comes in off a solid freshman year, one where he was in the 17’s for much of the important part of the XC season and raced to 2:07/4:47 in track. It’s clear that he took this summer seriously, because a 16:32 opener is quite a move upward. He’s improved by over 30 sec. from last fall’s peak, giving Powers enough juice to make them a serious D2 contender.
