Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

SARANAC SERENADERS

Addison Bixler, Coopersville

Oakley Osterhart had a breakout season as a freshman, now others in her class are coming along. Bixler was close behind last fall, running in the 20’s for much of the year, her best mark coming in the RCA Conference Meet, where she placed 7^th. She made a greater appearance in track, especially in the 1600m, as she had grabbed 4^th in the conference and raced to 5:30 by season’s end. The upward trend has continued in cross, where Addison has nabbed PRs in her first two meets, heading straight toward that 20 min. barrier.

Rylen Richey, Grand Ledge

What an outstanding pack and performance from the Comet boys. Five of the top-nine spots were occupied by Grand Ledge kids, all running under 16:36. They ran together, led by a 16:11 by Richey. His low-16 effort was almost 1.5 minutes faster than where he debuted last year and a good 20 sec. faster than where he was at season’s end. If this start is any indication, we could see the Comets pulling toward a top finish at MIS in a few months time.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

FIERY AT ST. FRANCIS

Anna Drauer, Lansing Catholic

Could a strong team get even stronger? Winners of the D3 title in 2024, the Cougars got it done with tremendous depth, placing five girls in the top-60 of the race. All five (and their top-six) of those girls were underclasswomen, thus it was gonna be tough for any team to show up with a better foundation. I’ve got bad news for the rest of the division – Lansing Catholic has added more. Drauer hovered around the 13 min. mark for much of middle school cross and early on, it seems as if she can handle the additional distance. Her 20:36 on the tough Michigan Catholic course was very close to the pace she averaged last year.

Soren Crosthwaite, Jackson Lumen Christi

Region 23 was projected to be an extremely strong, top-heavy. Lumen Christi, a top-ten squad, looked to be a favorite to qualify, but was projected third outside of Jonesville and Hanover-Horton. The Titans appeared to be top-heavy themselves, relying on the trio of Morrow, Bolton, and Shore to score very few points up front. I’m happy to say that three may actually be four. Crosthwaite appeared in several races last year, staying north of 19:00 in each outing. One race into his sophomore fall, he’s already dropped 1.5 minutes from the past. An additional low stick and better winning odds in a highly competitive region.

Finally finished with the summer previews, onto REAL, ACTUAL performances by the great kids making up the sport in our state!

You’re gonna have to bear with me as I build out the 2025 apparatus and how I want the posts to appear this year. There are some areas I think I’ve shored up, getting the math done even quicker, so more time can be spent focused on the athletes. No I have not learned how to program (I never will – sounds boring), everything is still pumped out in trusty ‘ol Excel. The graphics below are from previous years, the plan is to update those over Labor Day weekend.

As always, I’ll do my best to give a few shoutouts on these posts. Early in the season, these will be concentrated on names I don’t immediately recognize or athletes that are running much faster than I had anticipated. If someone’s given love, they probably deserve it, because there’s a ton of dedication that goes into finding those improvements. If you’re a coach/parent/teammate that feels someone deserves a mention, nicely e-mail/message me, and I’ll do my best to write some words about that person.

HAPPY BEGINNINGS

Malynda Lambros, Whitmore Lake

The Trojan sophomore is continuing the downward trend established last fall. Malynda began her freshman season on the outside of Whitmore Lake’s contributors, then as October rolled around, found herself in the 21’s as a crucial part of their lineup. At the D4 Finals, she busted through into the 20’s and now in her first two 5k’s of the 2025 season, she’s stayed there. Her opener at Lamplighter was a personal best and her 20:02 here far eclipsed that. Sub-20 is coming soon.

Raymond Herek, Williamston

The progress has just been precipitous. If we peek at his openers, we get a sense of how far he’s come. Just two years past, Herek begun his season with a 19:31 at Haslett. A year ago, his year started here with an 18:09. And now, 16:59, the second sub-17 of his career. If Herek can continue his trajectory, he’ll be a major help in his Williamston boys springing an upset and qualifying out of Region 14.
